This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Bituminous Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including Air Compressor, Crack Sealing Machine, Asphalt Kettle, Pneumatic Tire Roller, Steel Wheel Roller, Tandem Dump Truck, Front End Loader, Tractor Trailer, Asphalt Distributor, Asphalt Paving Machine, Asphalt Tanker, Stone Spreader, Track Hoe, Brush Chipper, Forklift, Motor Grader and other pieces as needed on the various operations.
This position will serve as a lead worker of a bituminous crew. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, AST paving, asphalt paving, pavement repair, crack sealing, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt, and salt brine application.
Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers the following:
+ Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
+ Experience in one of the following: AST paving, asphalt paving or asphalt patching
+ Experience in supervising and training others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations
+ Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt paver, crack sealing machine, asphalt tanker, stone spreader or sweeper
Additional Expectations
Ability to perform assigned tasks and follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the ability to operate both manual and automatic transmissions. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Release forms ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06 must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol. Safety toe footwear required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
