Description of Work

This posting will fill two positions: 60016996 and 60016998. Only one application is needed to be considered for both positions.

This position is located in the Onslow County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads in Onslow County. On a regular and recurring basis, employees operate at least two pieces of equipment, including but not limited to: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patch/crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper. Experience in performing semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks, such as hauling asphalt, aggregate or soil materials, plowing snow, spreading salt, compacting asphalt, compacting embankments, sweeping roads; loading ditching material; and disposing of roadside debris. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency responses include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with a higher-level positions.

+ Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, and construction procedures.
+ Working knowledge of Work Zone safety and Workplace safety policies.
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
+ Experience in one of the following: ditch maintenance or asphalt patching, pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal operations.
+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations
Additional Expectations:
Safety toe footwear is required for this position. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment screening.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
