    This posting is for a VERT III (Vehicle/ Equipment Repair Technician III) that will serve as the Division 2 Diagnostic Technician / Fuel Site Coordinator. This position will perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving advanced diagnostics and the use of computer diagnostic software to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of light, medium and heavy duty on and off-road equipment. This position will be responsible for maintaining and repairing fuel sites throughout Division 2 to include automated fuel systems and associated components, Underground Storage Tanks (UST) compliance and inspections. This will include ensuring all required NCDOT and NCDENR records and documentation associated with UST’s and fuel sites are maintained correctly, including annual and tri-annual testing and 30-day fuel site inspections. Utilizing SAP to monitor and correct fuel error reports and updating mileage and hours on equipment. This position will be responsible for 2-way radio communications, including programming, inspection, installation, troubleshooting, and repairing mobile 2-way radios, and base stations. This position will also be the emergency generator contact. This will include assisting in generator inspections and needed repairs. Candidate must have the ability to perform the following, read and follow electrical and hydraulic schematics, possess the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects, follow and perform written and oral instructions, multi-task while maintaining focus, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. This candidate must be able to perform skilled mechanic work including but not limited to the following systems brakes, steering, tires and tubes, wheels, rims and hubs, transmission (auto and manual), charging systems, cranking systems, ignition systems, CAN BUS systems and associated control modules, lighting systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, instruments & gages, and air intake systems. This candidate will assist other technicians in troubleshooting, and completing more complex repairs, and assisting supervisors when needed. Work assignments will vary in complexity depending on the type of equipment and system.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

     

    + Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.

    + Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.

    + Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities.

    + Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment.

    + Experience in the diagnostics and repair of powertrain components.

    Additional Expectations:

    The employee m ust be able to operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed.

     

    Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
