Position functions as a Transportation Worker III in Division 13, Roadside Environmental Unit in the Buncombe County Office. Experience necessary in the operational areas of erosion control, planting and plant maintenance, herbicide operations and general Roadside Environmental operations. Work involves planting shrubs, trees, flowers, and ground cover; seeding and mulching; installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating hand and power tools, inspecting and servicing equipment. Labor intensive. Required to work in diverse working environment; all weather conditions and terrain, heavy traffic and traffic moving at high speeds. Some night and weekend activities required, including emergency work such as storm damage cleanup/snow/ice removal. Familiar with or able to learn to use small hand tools, power tools, operate augers, manual/hydraulic and other tools. Operate various truck, trailers, tractors, and specialized equipment. Must have ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform variety of other assigned duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers the following:
+ Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices.
+ Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush.
+ Experience in operation of computer-controlled pesticide application equipment.
+ Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
Additional Expectations:
Perform flagging operation to safely guide traffic through work zones; receive and give effective communications; perform manual labor for extended periods of time; operate equipment that vibrates; perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather; traverse uneven terrain; repetitively lift 50 lbs. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre- employment drug screening is required for this position. Release form (ALCDRG-01) and background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for past three years about controlled substance/alcohol test. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2413-05 required for employment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
