    Facilities Technician

Reports to: Director of Shelter Operations

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Your Mission: Keep Our Facilities Running to Keep Our Mission Moving

Are you a hands-on problem solver who takes pride in maintaining safe, efficient, and welcoming spaces? As a Facilities Technician at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the infrastructure that powers our lifesaving work. From repairing equipment to maintaining vehicles to keeping our buildings in top shape, you’ll be the go-to resource that ensures everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with their hands, is highly dependable, and takes initiative. You’ll work collaboratively across departments to ensure our shelters remain clean, functional, and safe for both people and pets.

    What You’ll Do

As a Facilities Technician, you’ll be responsible for the maintenance and repair of ARL buildings, vehicles, and equipment across all locations. You’ll respond quickly to maintenance requests to minimize downtime and ensure that staff and animals have what they need to operate and thrive. You’ll also help maintain safety by following OSHA regulations and modeling best practices that support a secure, hazard-free work environment. Collaboration is key in this role—you’ll coordinate with departments to keep our spaces running efficiently and assist the Grounds & Crematory team when needed to care for exercise yards, sidewalks, and walking paths. In the absence of designated team members, you may also step in to help maintain exterior facilities and grounds. Your work helps protect the wellbeing of the people and animals who depend on our spaces—and your attention to detail will help ensure every repair, replacement, and renovation aligns with ARL’s commitment to excellence.

    What You Bring

You have at least two years of experience in facility or building maintenance and hold a high school diploma or GED. You bring demonstrated knowledge of preventative and predictive maintenance practices, and experience working with tools, construction equipment, and safety protocols. Familiarity with electrical safety, risk analysis, and general building systems is important in this role. You’re a clear communicator, work well independently or as part of a team, and have strong problem-solving skills. You’re adaptable, calm under pressure, and capable of juggling multiple priorities. A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record are required.

    Working Conditions

This role involves working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. You must be able to lift up to 100 lbs and be comfortable performing tasks that involve bending, standing, kneeling, and operating various tools and equipment. You may be exposed to pet dander, cleaning solutions, loud noises, animal waste, and occasional minor injuries such as scratches or bites.

    Why Work at the ARL?

At the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, your work directly supports our mission of helping animals in need. As a Facilities Technician, your role is crucial to the safety, comfort, and function of the spaces where our team does its most important work. You’ll join a dedicated, mission-driven organization where every person—and every repair—makes a difference.

Employment in this position is at-will, meaning that either the employee or the ARL may terminate the employment relationship at any time.

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and/or applicable state regulations, the Animal Rescue League will provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and encourages prospective employees and incumbents to discuss potential accommodations.
