    The Attorney/Director (A/D) of Student Legal Services (SLS) is both a practicing attorney with a full caseload and the leader of SLS.

     

    In the attorney component of the role, the A/D advises and represents students on their individual personal legal matters in a broad spectrum of legal areas. The attorney counsels students about their legal issues and options in the areas of Criminal, Landlord/Tenant, Tort, Contract, Consumer, Domestic Relations, Protection Order, Debt Collection, Employment, Traffic, Constitutional and Administrative law, among others. The attorney also represents student clients on Felony/Misdemeanor/Petty Offense/Municipal Criminal, Civil, and Administrative matters through negotiation with opposing parties, advocacy before tribunals, and post-judgment/appellate proceedings as appropriate for each case, to include all aspects of case and caseload management. In addition, the attorney creates and delivers presentations on legal topics.

     

    In the Director component of the role, the A/D is responsible for overseeing all office concerns per the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys, University policies/procedures, Division of Student Life policies/procedures, and the program's mission. This includes leading a team of legal professionals and maintaining overall responsibility for the program's operations. Additionally, the A/D represents the office at various University, community, and legal community meetings/events, as well as cultivates and maintains relationships with other campus offices and those in the local legal community.

     

    The Attorney/Director of SLS supervises a staff consisting of one full-time attorney, one full-time legal assistant, and one part-time marketing assistant, and also manages the office's professional relationships with two part-time contract attorneys.     The **Division of Student Life** consists of 30 departments that provide student support and services dedicated to helping students become successful, curious, competent individuals during their time at CU Boulder.

     

    The work in Student Life supports all factors of the student experience, no matter what department a staff member may work in. This includes where students live, eat, make friends, build professional skills, and find help if they need it. Many departments provide involvement opportunities, educational resources, and support services to help students find their community and build lifelong skills. Student Life also has shared services departments that support the work and staff of our student-facing areas, including areas like the Center for Assessment, Insight and Research, Business Services, Finance, Employee Experience, Communication and Marketing, and Technology Solutions.

     

    Student Legal Services is a small law office dedicated to serving the legal needs of CU Boulder students. Their mission is to help students resolve or minimize their legal situations, so they can focus on school. This is done by providing high-quality legal services to them through an easily accessible program that is responsive to their needs as clients and respectful of them as people. Staff also strive to educate students about their rights and responsibilities and about the legal system through consultations and outreach efforts so that they can avoid legal problems in the future.

     

    What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

    _Legal Consultation:_

    + Meet with clients to determine their legal issues and goals. Review related documents.

    + Advise clients of their legal options and the advantages/ disadvantages of those options.

    _Legal Representation:_

    + Review related case documents/discovery. Investigate case facts and witnesses.

    + Collect evidence in support of clients' legal positions. Research legal and factual issues.

    + Analyze cases for legal strengths and weaknesses.

    + Formulate case strategies, taking into account applicable law, facts, discovery, context, and jurisdictional factors.

    + Draft and file legal motions, briefs, and other documents.

    + Develop, locate, and prepare lay and expert witnesses.

    + Draft and issue subpoenas.

    + Negotiate with opposing parties and counsel. Draft settlement agreements.

    + Advocate for clients in court or at other proceedings such as motions hearings, dispositions, sentencings, Department of Motor Vehicle hearings, and University conduct/honor code proceedings.

    + Prepare for and litigate cases at trial.

    + Litigate cases post-judgment and on appeal.

    _Outreach:_

    + Create/deliver presentations for students and other constituent groups on legal topics.

    + Form/maintain partnerships with other CU stakeholders' agencies to promote the office and its services.

    + Represent the office and CU on campus and in the local legal community.

    _Legal Training:_

    + Attend substantive, ethical, and DEI legal education trainings to maintain attorney licensure and stay abreast of changes in the law/legal practice.

    _Administrative:_

    + Assist with office administrative tasks as needed.

    _Director:_

    + Manage the legal team.

    + Provide support and coaching to the team to ensure high-quality legal work.

    + Supervise daily operations of the office to effect compliance with attorney ethics rules, University policies/procedures, and office's mission.

    + Responsible for office cases and caseload; operating, COLTAF client trust and gift fund accounts; credit card payment system; conflict of interest data; confidential client files; budget preparation and compliance; law library; comprehensive calendar; reporting; outreach and communications.

    + Ensure the office environment leverages the strengths and accomplishments of staff, promotes teamwork, and empowers staff members with diverse responsibilities.

    + Ensure that staff members are aware of and following relevant University policies and procedures.

    + Represent the office at various campus, community, and legal community meetings and events.

    + Cultivate and maintain relationships with other campus offices and those in the local legal community.

    + Manage the office's professional relationships with two part-time contract attorneys.

     

    _Other duties as assigned in support of the Student Legal Services and the University's missions._

    What You Should Know

    + The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8am - 5pm (except University closures).

    + Colorado law license.

    + 5+ years of litigation and trial experience.
