This is a paid temporary position limited to a maximum of 9 months from the date of hire. In addition to being a fantastic place to work, CDOT offers all temporary employees paid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at 48 hours.
This position is not covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

About the Unit
The temporary archaeologist works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Division of Transportation Development’s Environmental Programs Branch (EPB). The Environmental Branch is responsible for ensuring that CDOT’s planning, construction, permitting and maintenance activities comply with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, executive orders, interagency agreements, and CDOT policies that mandate the protection and enhancement of the human and natural environment.
The branch ensures that all projects are evaluated, planned, cleared and managed as efficiently as possible and that it provides a high quality level involvement for all aspects of the environmental approval process.
About the Position
The Temporary Archaeologist provides support to the Senior Archaeologist by assisting with tasks related to cultural resources regulatory compliance for project delivery statewide. These tasks include, but are not limited to, conducting archaeological field surveys, documenting archaeological resources, and preparing survey reports and associated materials. With oversight from the Senior Archaeologist, the position is responsible for assisting with facilitating compliance with state and federal historic preservation laws, including the Colorado Historic Register Act and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) This position provides support to all of CDOT’s five regions statewide.
Major duties and responsibilitiesinclude, but are not limited to:
+ Conducts archaeological field surveys along proposed transportation construction and maintenance project corridors statewide.
+ Uses a variety of GIS software and satellite imagery to develop and analyze project data.
+ Identifies prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and evaluates them for significance relative to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Criteria.
+ Assesses the seven aspects of integrity of archaeological sites (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association) that are set by the NRHP to determine integrity.
+ Prepares the appropriate Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) Colorado Cultural Resource Survey Forms for each archaeological site identified during surveys. Data generated for these forms include, but are not limited to, legal locations (township/range), site description, identifying site type (i.e. camp, quarry, kill site, etc.), artifact inventory, and drawing a detailed site map.
+ Plots sites on USGS topographic maps and records site and survey GIS data.
+ Writes cultural resources reports for each project, incorporating results of all research avenues and follows Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) guidelines for report format.
+ Determines the extent of effects to archaeological resources that may result from transportation project-related activities.
+ Understands and applies the stipulations of the CDOT Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, which includes providing guidance on how CDOT conducts Section 106 and also providing guidance on the types of projects that can be cleared internally without State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) consultation.
+ Coordinates closely with CDOT Region environmental staff and engineers to gather information needed for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Colorado Historic Register Act consultation for projects.
+ With oversight from the Senior Archaeologist, is responsible for compliance with state and federal historic preservation laws (e.g., Section 106, Colorado Historic Register Act).
+ With oversight from Senior Archaeologist, develops and sends correspondence and other materials related to Section 106 eligibility and effect determinations and develops and implements mitigation for adverse effects to archaeological resources as needed.
+ Develops memos to clear projects for CDOT Regions that include detailed information about the project and consultation process.
+ For assigned projects, maintains and organizes the EPB archaeology program filing system, including digitizing old survey reports, context studies, and project files and including them on the master Google drive.
+ For assigned projects, develops, populates, and maintains shared Google drives.
+ Uploads archaeological data to the C-Plan Cultural Resources Data View/GIS database for use by CDOT staff, as needed.
+ Develops a method of tracking workload and project clearances to ensure that project delivery due dates are met.
+ Coordinates input of and updates to Geographic Information System (GIS) data for the CDOT cultural resources program, including the C-Plan Cultural Resources Data Viewer/GIS database; this involves retrieving pertinent CDOT cultural resource data from department files and from the general repository at the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (OAHP) and incorporating GIS data for archaeological resources documented in the field.
+ Develops shape files for archaeological surveys and resources for previous projects and new projects.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
+ Day time hours Monday - Friday.
+ This position is anticipated to work 40 hours per week.
+ Day time travel during business hours to conduct fieldwork and site visits as well as to meetings.
+ The position may require overnight travel to conduct archaeological field surveys statewide. Overnight travel will average 1 – 2 nights per month but may be more or less depending on project details.
+ Fieldwork occasionally may involve long hours and extended periods, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes, and the need to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
+ Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Experience Only:
Six years (6) of full-time or equivalent experience as an archaeologist which included:
+ At least six months of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management; and
+ At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology; and
+ Demonstrated experience in Colorado prehistoric or historic archaeology, or in related Colorado topical, geographic or cultural areas.
OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience totaling at least six years.
+ A Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology.
+ AND two years of experience as an Archaeologist which included:
+ At least six months of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management; and
+ At least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology; and
+ Demonstrated experience in Colorado prehistoric or historic archaeology, or in related Colorado topical, geographic or cultural areas.

Preferred Qualifications
The exceptional applicant will be an experienced Archaeologist with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
+ Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
+ Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
+ Masters degree in archaeology or anthropology;
+ Knowledge and experience in archaeology, including conducting field surveys, documenting resources, and completing reports, preferably in Colorado;
+ Familiarity and experience completing compliance activities related to state and federal historic preservation laws, including Section 106 and the Colorado Historic Register Act, and NRHP Criteria;
+ Experience with and ability to successfully follow the procedures in the CDOT Cultural Resources Manual. Familiarity with the cultural resource survey procedures of the Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and/or Tribal Historic Preservation Offices in Colorado;
+ Meets the qualifications for a Field Director/Project Archaeologist for archaeological permits from the SHPO, Bureau of Land Management, and/or US Forest Service;
+ Experience developing and implementing mitigation for adverse effects to archaeological resources;
+ Exemplary verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills; and
+ Solid analytical and critical thinking skills;
+ Willingness to be flexible, independent, and creative;
+ Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, etc.), Gmail, Google Applications and GIS software;
+ Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations
