Job Summary

The microbiome represents an exciting frontier in medicine, and early successes in the field have demonstrated the dynamic interactions among individual microbial species and highlighted the crosstalk between microbiota and their hosts at the mucosal interface. The Li research group has been focusing on the development of molecular and live cell-based therapeutics, with a major emphasis on harnessing innovative synthetic biology, microbial engineering, and drug delivery approaches for improving human health in a sustainable manner. Currently, three directions are being explored: (1) engineering probiotics to secrete biologics such as nanobodies to address intestinal diseases; (2) understanding the interactions between oral microbiota and the host; and (3) engineering probiotics for cancer immunotherapy.

The Li Lab, now at the University of Michigan, develops innovative molecular and live cell-based therapeutics through synthetic biology, microbial engineering, and drug delivery. Research areas include engineering probiotics for intestinal diseases and cancer immunotherapy and studying oral microbiota-host interactions. The lab is supported by both internal and extramural funding sources.

Responsibilities*

+ Communicate with vendors on purchasing instruments.

+ Facilitate day-to-day research laboratory operations, including procurement and inventory of reagents and supplies.

+ Manage the laboratory's IBC protocol to ensure safe usage of recombinant DNA constructs, viral gene delivery systems, and human cell cultures.

+ Manage multiple IACUC protocols (involving rodents) and serve as the point of contact for biannual IACUC inspections.

+ Serve as the laboratory's safety officer, maintaining all required documentation for annual EHS inspections.

+ Provide technical support to a range of research projects using various techniques including bacterial and mammalian cell culture, recombinant DNA techniques, and qPCR.

+ Facilitate animal research by the faculty, students, and postdocs in the lab by assisting with animal surgeries and post-surgical care.

Required Qualifications*

+ Master's degree or PhD, preferably in microbiology, molecular biology, bioengineering, chemistry, or related discipline.

+ 5-6 years related experience.

+ Candidates must be interested in working with technical aspects of cancer/rare disease diagnosis/therapy and their translations to clinical applications.

+ Familiar with the operation and performance of basic lab equipment, i.e., centrifuge, microscopes, etc.

+ Good organizational skills and ability to work alongside other scientists without extensive supervision.

+ Willingness to learn new techniques as required for project progress.

Desired Qualifications*

+ Familiarity with molecular cloning, flow cytometry, immunoassays, cell and organoid culture is preferred.

+ Experience of animal models is strongly preferred.

This is an onsite position-5 days per week.

Additional Information

**This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of extension based upon need and funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
