Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.
NBC News is looking for an entertainment producer to join its Business Unit. This person will report to the Senior Producer of the unit and work with correspondents, reporters, producers and editors on in-depth investigative reporting and breaking news coverage of the entertainment and media industry. While this role will include some feature and enterprise stories, it will primarily involve covering daily news and major events impacting the industry such as the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial, actor and writers strikes, and the impact of streaming platforms and AI on the future of media. The producer will have a high metabolism for daily news while also constantly thinking about the bigger picture. They will be adept at producing for a range of shows, content types and platforms. This includes field producing, package producing, live TV production, etc. This producer will be at ease managing all phases of reporting from ideation to execution, including in-depth reporting, interview selection and preparation, scripting and editing. This producer will also be a strong reporter and writer who can produce original and enterprising work and write for TV or digital when required.
Responsibilities:
+ Conceive, research and pitch day-of-air segments, original reporting and enterprise stories for NBC News’ broadcast and digital platforms.
+ Produce daily and breaking news live hits and packages for the broadcast and streaming platforms
+ Independently shoot, write and produce live and taped stories and segments
+ Regularly pitch, report and write for digital
+ Collaborate with teams across platforms on distinct, original editorial pursuits
+ Maintain timely understanding of current events, trends and ongoing coverage in movies, TV and media
+ Monitor and flag key daily entertainment stories
+ Build and maintain sourcing.
+ 5+ years experience producing entertainment and media news
+ Bachelor’s degree in journalism or relevant course of study, or equivalent experience.
+ Must have experience in producing stories (both breaking news and medium term projects), including researching, writing, and shooting – as well as an ability to investigate and do original reporting.
+ Must be able to multitask potentially multiple stories across a broad range of topics.
+ Must be willing to travel as needed.
+ Able and willing to work flexible hours, under tight deadline pressure, including breaking news.
+ Must be willing to work in NYC.
+ Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.
Desired Qualifications:
+ A proven track record in entertainment coverage. Sourcing is preferred but not mandatory.
+ Understanding of the entertainment world landscape and ability to represent NBC News in a professional manner.
+ Experience managing high profile public figures and representation.
+ A collegial, flexible and collaborative approach to the job.
+ Ability to develop multiple story ideas simultaneously, research and plan segments.
+ Exceptional news judgment and editorial skills: Ability to recognize stories with high potential for compelling stories.
+ Strong writing skills.
+ Editorial knowledge of entertainment stories.
+ Strong time management skills.
+ Preferred but not required proficiency with Slack and iNews.
Additional Requirements:
+ Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. Potentially more as broadcast needs dictate.
