Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs nursing assessments and interventions on pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.
• Provides age-appropriate immunizations to children following the Standards of Pediatric Immunization Practices as adopted by the State Board of Health.
• Initiates follow-up on missed immunization appointments.
• Assists with medical clinic procedures and exams as needed; utilizes other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyzes patient data.
• Assesses learning needs of the patient and family.
• Gives accurate and complete information to patient and family.
• Assists with completion and maintenance of student health records.
• Works closely/collaborates with VNS school nurses, House of Mercy Clinic/School Social Worker, and school faculty/staff to insure timely and appropriate identification of needs/provision of health services.
• Maintains a working knowledge of services complimentary to those of House of Mercy Medical Clinic. Seeks opportunities to work collaboratively with those organizations and makes recommendations to maximize those opportunities to extend high quality medical care to patients.
• Provides education and training to students, parents and staff on various health related topics/issues.
• Documents nursing activity in appropriate place(s). Prepares and maintains records/reports in timely and qualitative fashion.
• Collects relevant data for ongoing progress reports and year-end program evaluation.
• Uses supervision effectively, seeks guidance as necessary for performance of duties, asks question when in doubt. Incorporates comments into performance.
• Maintains positive work atmosphere/climate that promotes cooperation and creativity.
• Observes the clients right to confidentiality and uses complete discretion when discussing client matters.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
• Attends and participates in department and interdisciplinary team meetings as scheduled.
• Participates in relevant House of Mercy and community in-service training programs as required.
• Participates in planning and development of school health programs. Make suggestions for improving House of Mercy’s health services.
• Participates in the education and training of students, in coordination and interaction with supervisor.
• Actively participates in the pursuit of additional funding sources to ensure continuation of program.
• Serves as consultant to staff in areas of specialized experience.
• Participates on committee as appropriate.
• Participates in public relations efforts to promote the clinic and its programs.
• Maintains communications on a professional level with all co-workers, department staff, students, faculty, school staff, etc.
• Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Possession of a current license as a registered nurse issued by the State of Iowa
• Two years experience in primary care and/or school nursing preferred.
• Mandatory child abuse training to be completed within one month of hire.
• Domestic violence and parenting training to be completed within six months of hire.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification to be completed within one month of hire.
