This Transportation Worker II is located in Rockingham County Roadside Environmental. Positions will perform a wide range of erosion control and vegetation management responsibilities. Work involves planting trees, shrubs, and flowers , seeding and mulching, plant bed maintenance, herbicide applications, installing traffic and erosion control devices, and snow and ice operations. Work also includes operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment including but not limited to dump trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mowers, and mulch blowers, as well as hand and power tools.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers the following:
+ Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
+ Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
+ Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hydroseeder, skid steer)
+ Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations
Additional Expectations:
NC Pesticide Operators License with the ability to obtain Right of Way endorsement within 60 days being hired into position.
Safety toe footwear is required within 30 days of employment. Employee must have ability to traverse steep & uneven terrain, and have ability to lift 50 lbs. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience:
High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
