Brief Position Overview
The Museum Store Manager & Buyer is responsible for over $1,000,000 in annual merchandise sales revenue. The Museum Store has 1,500 sq. ft. of retail space featuring books, clothing, jewelry, educational materials, and other items related to the Museum’s mission and its permanent and changing exhibits.

General Statement
Museum of the Rockies ( MOR ) is a college-level division of Montana State University that is closely aligned with a related non-profit organization. It is renowned for displaying an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils, including Montana’s T. rex skeleton. MOR delights members and visitors with changing exhibits from around the world, regional and natural history exhibits, planetarium shows, educational programs & camps, insightful lectures, benefit events, and a museum store. MOR staff and volunteers work to ensure that every visitor and member’s experience is full of exploration, discovery, excitement and awe.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manager Duties
+ Manages, onboards, trains, recruits, and oversees scheduling of Museum Store employees in collaboration with the Assistant Manager.
+ Creates a culture of customer service through training and modeling effective behaviors.
+ Has a regular presence in the Store to interact with customers and support cashiers.
+ Responds to customer requests and questions and handles minor emergency situations, as needed.
+ Ensures maintenance and cleanliness of store and storerooms.
+ Oversees refreshing of store visuals and aesthetics.
+ Manages store inventory, including overseeing receiving and entry of inventory into the point-of-sale system and the annual physical inventory.
+ Manages the Museum Store budget.
+ Collaborates with the Marketing Department on social media and other advertising
+ Operates the Museum Store for the museum’s signature and fundraising events, including organizing book signing events, which primarily occur during weekends and after hours.
Store Buyer Duties
+ Purchases merchandise, including negotiating with buyers.
+ Selects and sources merchandise, including travel to merchandise shows.
+ Maintains effective relationships with vendors and manufacturers.
+ Analyzes inventory data to determine levels of demand and quantities to order.
+ Develops new merchandise specific to Museum of the Rockies.
+ Collaborates with other museum departments on merchandise for events and special programs.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Progressively responsible experience in merchandise and management of all aspects of a financially successful retail operation.
+ Experience managing inventory through a point-of-sale system and conducting physical inventories.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, business, or a related field.
+ Retail experience in a museum or non-profit setting.
+ Experience developing and marketing new products.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
+ The successful candidate must be willing to travel, both regionally and nationally.
+ Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)
+ Must be willing to work nights and/or weekends as needed and cover student employee shifts unexpectedly.

Physical Demands
+ Ability to transport up to 40 lbs.
