The Licensed Counselor is responsible for promoting mental health awareness and wellness on campus through direct counseling, consultation, intervention, and training. The Licensed Professional Counselor will lead campus student wellness efforts as well as participate in campus initiatives related to student development and success, as needed. The position is exempt and reports to the Dean of Student Affairs. Position requires driving to branch campuses, and off-site meetings.
Major Duties:
• Provide short term individual counseling to students to assist in resolving personal problems.
• Conducts intakes, evaluations, and assessments for individual counseling sessions with students.
• Responsible for treatment plan development, case notes, and care coordination as it relates to personal, career, and academic endeavors in individual and group settings.
• Conducts group counseling sessions on a variety of topics each semester.
• Refers to area mental health professionals as appropriate. Develops and presents workshops and seminars on mental health issues, academic success, etc.
• Creates mental health information to dispense to students.
• Assists in the design and implementation of outreach psychoeducational programs.
• Provides educational counseling for new and continuing students.
• Assists students in the development of their individual educational plans and goals.
• Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by attending professional development training, workshops, seminars, and conferences and by reading professional literature.
• Accepts referrals from faculty and staff.
• Provides crisis intervention and support to students.
• Serves on the Behavioral Intervention Team. Reaches out to students referred by TEAMS system.
• Establishes and maintains effective referral relationships with counselors, rehabilitation facilities, in- and out-patient mental health facilities and crisis centers and refers students to relevant community resources as needed.
Competencies
• Knowledge of privacy practices including HIPAA and FERPA.
• Knowledge and adherence to professional ethics set by the American Counseling Association, National Board of Certified Counselors, and other credentialing boards.
• Knowledge of counseling techniques and professional protocols.
• Knowledge of the mission of postsecondary vocational/technical education.
• Knowledge of college policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of community and college resources for mental health.
• Skill to work cooperatively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
• Skill to make timely decisions.
• Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in decision making and problem solving.
• Skill in providing mental health counseling, assessment, and referral.
• Skill in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the public.
Physical Demands
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed in an office.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, clinical mental health, or related occupational field.
• A current Georgia license as one of the following: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or, Clinical Social Worker, Master Social Worker, Marriage and Family Counselor, or APC (Associate Professional Counselor) within one year and full licensure within 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications (in addition to minimum qualifications)
• One year counseling experience preferably post-secondary experience
