The Health Educator position is assigned to the Vernon Parish Health Unit to support the WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) Nutrition program. This position functions as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) to improve the health and nutritional status of the population participating in the federally-funded Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) by providing WIC participants with the nutritional knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to maintain a healthy diet. Implement program requirements of WIC through contact with participants, vendors and healthcare providers, and by expanding outreach efforts to increase breastfeeding rates and community awareness of the benefits to breastfeeding in Region 6.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR
Twelve semester hours in food and nutrition or dietetics plus three years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator or in patient care; OR
An associate's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing plus two years of experience working as a WIC Clinic Nutrition Educator; OR
A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics, human ecology, family and consumer science, health promotion, pre-medicine, or nursing.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
+ Identifies and assigns the appropriate risk factors. Interprets state policy and procedures regarding the federally funded supplemental Women, Infants & Children Nutrition Program (WIC). Implements state policy by providing certification and recertification services to eligible clients in the parish health unit.
+ Serves as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) for the WIC Program, including determining eligibility for WIC, evaluating lab values, nutritional requirements, and prescribing food benefits. Performs nutritional assessments by evaluating anthropometric measurements, HGB, nutritional diet histories, and medical and social histories.
+ Develops care plans, counsels and monitors the progress of intervention. Provides nutrition education based on the nutritional assessment and the appropriate risk codes. Provides referrals to other state and local services that assist the needs of the participants to reach healthy outcomes.
+ Provides breastfeeding support to WIC participants. Facilitates links to medical support in the area of breastfeeding concerns as needed by WIC participants. Works directly with the WIC Peer Counselors.
+ Provides breastfeeding bag education as well as demos the use of breast pumps to the participants. Assist with maintaining breast pump logs and issuance. Maintains logs for return formula and organizes the pickup of the excess formula with the food bank. Assist with providing a special formula order monthly, entering the formula in inventory, as well as issuing the formula from inventory while following state mandated policies and procedures.
+ Provides technical assistance and in-service training to health unit staff in the area of computer data entry (LAWIN) as it pertains to WIC certification, recertification and other WIC services. Performs intake data entry when necessary to facilitate the delivery of WIC services. Assist with training new employees and dietetic students.
+ Performs anthropometric measurements and hemoglobin testing on WIC participants as necessary to facilitate the certification and/or recertification process.
+ Performs any other additional duties not listed, but necessary for the work unit or to ensure the overall quality of the agency services.
