    Section 27 – Traffic Engineering

    The primary responsibilities of the Traffic Engineering Division are to design and review traffic control devices, traffic studies/reports, and roadway geometric features for state roadway projects.

     

    This position serves as a Traffic Engineer with knowledge of the study, design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signals, pavement markings, and signs, as well as geometric road features such as roadway horizontal and vertical geometry, intersections, islands, interchanges, and medians.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

    NOTE:

    This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Serves as a Traffic Engineer with knowledge of the study, design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signals, pavement markings, and signs, as well as geometric road features such as roadway horizontal and vertical geometry, intersections, islands, interchanges, and medians.

    + Functions as a task manager for the review of traffic control (work zone), signing, traffic signals, and project permits.

    + Prepares and reviews traffic-engineering reports/studies and plans requiring the collection and interpretation of field data.

    + Performs routine to highly complex engineering calculations to determine roadway horizontal and vertical geometric features that in some cases may include developing solutions to geometric, environmental, cost, traffic control and traffic maintenance constraints.

    + Utilizes traffic-engineering software to determine signal timings, traffic measures of effectiveness, and sign shop drawings. Also uses CAD Software to review and develop geometric solutions to plans for the proper selection and placement of geometric and traffic control devices, and other software including but not limited to web-based, mapping/GIS software.

    + Attends public meetings to assist the project team.

    + Provides technical guidance by assisting in the writing of Traffic Engineering scopes for other sections of the Department such as project management, planning and environmental and for local municipalities and developers.

    POSITION-SPECIFIC DETAILS:

    Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment, or by detail to special duty.

    Compensation: **Special Entrance Rates (SER)**

    + Engineer Intern 1 -- $2,115.20/biweekly

    + Engineer Intern 2 -- $2,263.20/biweekly

    + Engineer 3 -- $2,671.20/biweekly

    + Engineer 4 -- $2,952.00/biweekly

    + Engineer 5 -- $3,158.40/biweekly

     

    Career Progression:This position is in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and is being posted at the following levels: Engineer Intern Applicant, Engineer Intern 1, Engineer Intern 2, Engineer 3, Engineer 4, and Engineer 5. The maximum annual salary for the Engineer 5 is $126,256.00.
