    The Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department is actively seeking a Utility Worker.

    This is service maintenance work in performing semi-skilled buildings, grounds and equipment repair and maintenance duties. The work requires knowledge of standardized work routines used in the repair and maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is routine following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, but some variation in the sequence procedures used is permitted based on situations encountered in the workplace. The work is performed in a controlled environment where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable. Operates vehicles; light equipment such as mowers, tractors, blowers, and edgers; and janitorial equipment such as pressure washers and utilizes hand tools associated with buildings and grounds maintenance activities. The physical demands may involve lifting or moving objects weighing more than fifty (50) pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations, or workflow.

     

    Examples of Work

     

    + Performs the repair, construction and maintenance of buildings and fixtures.

    + Develops and implements preventative maintenance schedules, inspects facilities and equipment to ensure cleanliness, safety, adequacy and maintenance needs.

    + Assists trade personnel with maintenance issues.

    + Mows, edges, weeds, prunes, fertilizes, mulches, sweeps pavement and removes trash from grounds.

    + Cleans roof and pressure washes building.

    + Paints inside or outside of building as required.

    + Sets up and tears down classrooms depending on the needs of the class.

    + Replace air filters in HVAC equipment.

    + Replace water filters in ice machines in the canning center and extension office.

    + Operates and inspects tools and equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs.

    + Operates vehicles to transport materials or supplies.

    + Operates light equipment such as mowers, tractors, blowers, and edgers and janitorial equipment such as pressure washers and utilizes hand tools associated with buildings and grounds maintenance.

    + Loads and unloads vehicles and lifts and moves equipment, materials and supplies.

    + Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.

    + Performs related work as required.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    + Knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures used in performing building, grounds and equipment maintenance.

    + Knowledge of tools and equipment used in performing building, grounds and equipment maintenance.

    + Knowledge of applicable safety procedures and occupational hazards.

    + Ability to operate tools and equipment used in performing building, grounds and equipment maintenance.

    + Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.

    + Ability to read and understand written instructions and directions.

    Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

     

    + Must have at least two (2) years of experience in maintenance of public buildings, landscaping projects, or comparable work experience.

    + Must be able to read and write English and perform manual labor.

    LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

    + A valid Driver's License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained.

    + The City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification must qualify prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    + The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
