    The City of Norfolk’s Department of General Services is seeking a Visitor Services Specialist – Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator to design, implement, and strategically sustain a volunteer program that meets the needs of the animals, staff and community served.

     

    Develops and manages special events and volunteer programs and manages a gift shop. Schedules lectures and plans activities. Provides assistance to patrons to provide a memorable experience, and manages volunteers and staff.

    Essential Functions

    + Serves as the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator.

    + Research, devise, and implement effective volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.

    + Schedules and conducts Volunteer Orientation, training, and assignment of volunteers to meet the goals of the department.

    + Coach pertinent staff and volunteers to train, mentor, and serve as a primary contact throughout a volunteer shift.

    + Builds and maintains social media content related to the Volunteer and Outreach programs.

    + Develops and maintains advanced or specialized volunteer programs and training to ensure continual growth of the program.

    + Develops effective education, marketing and recruitment tools with the Department of Communications.

    + Plan, coordinate, and participate in events both on and off site.

    + Responsible for the development and implementation of humane education curriculum, programs to promote responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals.

    + Provide effective communication with volunteers via social media, email, in-person and by phone.

    + Use data management software and other resources to gather, track, and maintain detailed information and statistics regarding developmental programs, including creating reports as needed.

    + Inputs data in Microsoft Excel, Pet Point (animal shelter software), Better Impact (VMS) and other database programs; high degree of accuracy required.

    + Develops, archives, and maintains written developmental Volunteer Program and Outreach protocols.

    + Develops and delivers presentations to staff, volunteers and the public regarding different shelter programs.

    + Requires considerable knowledge and skill in Microsoft Office Suite software applications.

    + Requires effective interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

    + Requires ability to work with minimal supervision, function in a high volume, fast paced work environment through prioritization of work assignments, and to meet deadlines while handling multiple assignments.

    + Must possess basic knowledge of animal health, behavior, and welfare and must be comfortable interacting with all species and temperaments of animals.

    Education/Experience

    + Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two-year associates degree, diploma, or equivalent from a college, technical, business or vocational or correspondence school.

    Required:

    + Two years of relevant experience in business administration or customer service.

    Preferred:

    + Two years managerial experience.

    + Valid Driver's License preferred.

    Work Schedule

    + Hours are scheduled Saturday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Hours may require additional flexibility, nights, holidays, and weekends.

    + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
