Description of Work Unit
The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture.

Position Summary
A 12-month salaried with benefits non-tenure-track ( CCAF ) faculty Instructor position is available in the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University. The successful candidate will be expected to advise, coordinate, and fundraise for intercollegiate livestock judging activities, provide undergraduate animal science instruction, assist with Colorado youth extension and livestock judging programs, and be active in the recruiting programs of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Courses to be taught include the existing Introduction to Livestock Evaluation and Advanced Livestock Evaluation. Involvement in the Department is expected, and teaching other potential courses, depending on the skills and interests of the candidate. The successful applicant will have access to the College of Agricultural Sciences teaching herds, flocks, livestock facilities, and extension programs to help facilitate the longevity of the livestock judging program. The position also has the support resources to foster the success of the program, including but not limited to annual Next Century Judging funds and Livestock Judging Excellence Endowment. Students interested in livestock judging at Colorado State University also have the opportunity to apply for academic scholarships funded through an allocation by the University’s Board of Governors. The CSU FC campus and ARDEC is located near a wide cross-section of livestock production systems (i.e., beef cattle and sheep operations ranging from seedstock to growing and finishing). The campus sits at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Northern Colorado and offers excellent access to many venues for outdoor interests, air transportation, and the Denver Metro Area and SPUR campus, which includes several national animal agriculture organizations and facilities, most notably, the National Western Stock Show.

Required Job Qualifications
+ BS in Animal Science or a closely related field from and accredited institution.
+ Minimum of 3 years of experience competing and/or coaching intercollegiate livestock judging teams or serving as a livestock judge at local, county, and state fairs.
+ Demonstrated ability to develop, ore evident of, youth extension livestock programming that’s complementary to the livestock judging programs in Colorado.
+ Demonstrated aptitude and capability to create, organize, and teach undergraduate courses in animal science and livestock production.
+ Evidence of excellent communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal).
+ Evidence of strong leadership and team building skills commensurate with experience(s) working with livestock industries
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ MS in Animal Sciences or a closely related field.
+ Fundraising/development experience suggesting potential for raising and managing funds to support collegiate and youth livestock judging programs.
+ Experience in youth outreach and interest in helping coordinate youth livestock educational programs in Colorado. These programs include, but not limited to, national state, and county livestock shows, state livestock youth associations, judging clinics, etc.
+ Proficiency in recruiting students for agriculture, animal and equine education programs.

+ Depending on the successful candidate’s experience and interest, possibly teach additional undergraduate animal sciences courses in the department.
