    Base Pay Range: $25- $35/ hour, depending on experience

    Position Summary

    The Signal maintainer installs, inspects, tests, alters and repairs the railroad signal systems in an assigned territory. Repair various types of railroad signal equipment including all-electric, electro-pneumatic, all relay and mechanical interlocking machines, centralized traffic control machines, electronic code systems, train identity systems, microprocessors, switch machines, automated train stops, color light signals, highway grade warning systems, and related power and control equipment.

     

    Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties

     

    Perform advanced, quality railroad signal maintenance work in accordance with accepted professional practices, including the general code of operating rules, to ensure optimum performance of railroad signal systems and public and personal safety.

     

    Respond to trouble calls reported on railroad crossing failures.

     

    Evaluate patterns of railroad signal system failures and site engineering activities. Make appropriate corrections and/or recommend appropriate system improvements in a manner that optimizes available resources.

     

    Comply with company policy and Federal and State rules and regulations governing work activities including those issued by Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

     

    Complete required documentation including work reports and hours of service logs in an accurate and timely manner.

     

    Maintain awareness of customers' requirements. Notify Signal Supervisor, Lead Maintainer or Manager of present and future concerns of our customers.

     

    Work together to promote teamwork with fellow Signal Maintainers, construction crews and coworkers by communicating mutual concerns and providing appropriate relief.

     

    Perform other related duties and overtime as required.

     

    General/Other Responsibilities and Duties

    Required Skills and Qualifications

     

    High School Diploma or GED.

     

    Preferred: Successful completion of Classroom Signal Training which was sponsored by a qualified organization.

     

    Preferred: Associate Degree in Electronics or equivalent technical background gained through military or on-the-job training.

     

    Preferred: Previous maintenance experience.

     

    2 years’ railroad maintenance and signal crew experience on a construction crew of which at least six months must be in relief maintenance activities.

     

    Previous experience repairing and troubleshooting switch machines, electric lock mechanisms, ATS inductors, coded track circuits, event recorders, testing relays, interlocking plants, ABS and CTC signal systems.

     

    Possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record

     

    Pass pre-employment drug screen and ongoing drug and alcohol screening as required by federal regulatory agencies

     

    Must have working knowledge of motion sensors and predictors.

     

    AFTAC and AFO, DC and AC/DC type warning devices and circuits.

     

    Must have pole climbing experience.

     

    Knowledge and skills that represent a high degree of proficiency in the signaling craft.

     

    Working knowledge of public and personal safety.

     

    Have self-motivation, organization, trouble-shooting and planning skills

     

    Show initiative and able to work effectively with little direction

     

    Positively adapt to changes in responsibilities when changes occur

     

    Work effectively with little direction

     

    Work effectively with others including general public, customers, safety officials and coworkers.

     

    Ability to perform under stress when confronted with critical, emergency, unusual or dangerous situations or situations in which sustained attention is a make or break aspect of the job.

     

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

     

    Work 8 hour shift during normal business hours and be available on nights and weekends to answer trouble calls and respond to trouble calls to assigned territory within two hours

     

    Outside environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold.

     

    Hazards include a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, natural/methane gas, working on scaffolding or high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

     

    Bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

     

    Stand for sustained periods of time.

     

    Use upper extremities to press against something with force or pull.

     

    Express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Convey detailed or important spoken instructions or explanations to other workers or customers accurately, loudly or quickly.

     

    Distinguish colors; perceive depths and read blueprints and other written documents.

     

    Receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.

     

    Perform heavy lifting-over 100 Ib. /over 50 lb. frequently/over 20 lb. constantly.
