    The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking an experienced **_Research Specialist_** to assist with studies of hearing loss and balance dysfunction in animal models and human ear tissue. The Research Specialist will work in a laboratory under the general supervision of a faculty investigator. Participation in research conferences and the opportunity to perform own experiments within the context of laboratory projects are encouraged. There is the potential for authorship, and the lab has a history of including students and laboratory staff on abstracts and publications.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    + Carries out experiments to collect, analyze, and interpret data to be included in scientific manuscripts under the supervision of the PI; will receive training in lab techniques (e.g., tissue processing, brain sectioning, immunohistochemistry), microscopy (from imaging to data acquisition and analysis), and data analysis software tools.

    + Trains new students and laboratory staff in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques.

    + Collaborates with senior lab members and receives constructive guidance.

    + Refinement of existing protocols; development, optimizing and executing new protocols as necessary. Training new lab member(s) on protocol compliance.

    + Contribute to and assist in preparation of manuscripts and abstracts. Evaluate results and preparing figures for peer-reviewed publications and grants.

    + Participates in laboratory meetings, including data presentation and critique, and providing updates on protocol implementation status.

    + General laboratory support: managing lab supply and animal orders, organizing tissue processing logs, monitoring inventory, preparing specialized reagents, general lab organization.

    + Independently perform biochemical and molecular assays on tissue.

    + Independently perform behavioral tests in mice.

    + Identify and resolve problems involved in research assays.

    + Apply problem solving skills based on an understanding of the research and experience and progressively develop skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.

    + Contribute to manual annotations of digitized temporal bone histology slides.

    + Sustain an orderly laboratory workspace; perform related laboratory maintenance, monitor inventory of supplies, clean equipment, and place lab orders.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

    + One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience in immunohistochemistry, neuroscience, handling animals, and/or histopathology.

    Starting Salary Range: $17.11 - $29.90 HRLY ($23.51/hour targeted salary; Commensurate w/exp.)

     

    Employee group: Full Time

     

    Schedule: 9:00 - 5:30 M-F

     

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity.
