The Advisor for Cherry Creative and Talisman works closely and collaboratively with professional colleagues in the Office of Student Publications (WKU Student Publications), is skilled in journalism or a related field, is adept at mentoring and advising students and has a strong entrepreneurial focus on promoting and marketing products our students produce and helping generate revenue to support the overall Student Publications operation. WKU Student Publications is one of the most successful student media groups in the nation, awarded 50 national Pacemaker Awards from Associated Collegiate Press since our first in 1978 for Talisman and in 1981 for the College Heights Herald. In the past five years, each of our student media groups has won at least one Pacemaker, the highest honor in collegiate media.
Responsibilities
+ Primary advisor to Cherry Creative, a student-led branded content studio that produces sponsored content, specialty guides and special events to generate revenue across all platforms of Student Publications. As adviser, mentors and coaches students on ideation, marketing, design and content.
+ Primary advisor to Talisman, a life and culture magazine and website that promotes storytelling across multiple platforms including digital, print and social media. As adviser, coaches and mentors on precise reporting, excellent writing, design and editorial leadership.
+ Sustains and supports a climate of professionalism within which learning can take place, allowing student leaders to reach their own balance of freedom and responsibility without prior restraint.
+ Participates in the development and selection of nominees for Talisman editor and Cherry Creative director, and advises and mentors the student leaders on the hiring of student staffers.
+ Available to student staff on evenings and weekends as needed, and has ability and willingness to adjust schedule as needed for such activities.
+ Responsible for and assists with promotion of Student Publications products in the WKU community, taking the lead role working with students to promote and distribute Talisman magazine, special publications and events produced by Cherry Creative.
+ Manages budgetary matters for Talisman and Cherry Creative, and works closely with the Advertising Adviser on such matters related to Student Publications Advertising, to ensure operations are cost-effective, within budget and on deadline.
+ Participates in setting revenue targets each semester across the operation, and works closely with the Advertising Adviser to achieve those targets.
+ Works closely with the Director and Operations Coordinator on budgetary matters as well as setting and achieving priorities for the unit.
+ Manages the equipment inventory and check out system for the overall operation.
+ Working closely with other advisers, establishes a student basic-skills training program across all relevant student staffs to build essential skills in multiplatform journalism, including storytelling techniques, photography, video, audio, design and other technical skills.
+ Works with the Director and the Operations Coordinator to assess technology and equipment needs throughout the unit and to devise a plan for meeting those needs.
+ Maintains regular office hours and participates in planning activities and events as part of the unit professional staff.
+ Works collaboratively with all professional staff members of the Office on projects to benefit Student Publications.
+ Assists in developing plans for recruiting students both to WKU and to Student Publications
+ Demonstrated skills in design and conceptualization of thematic lines of storytelling.
+ Has demonstrated skills in marketing and creative services that are necessary for promoting the Office of Student Publications and its student-led areas.
+ Demonstrated abilities in storytelling techniques across multiple platforms (print, online, mobile, social media).
+ Track record of being detail-oriented and self-motivated.
+ Visionary approach to student media and an ability to lead toward that vision.
+ Excellent interpersonal communication skills with an ability to handle difficult situations with tact and diplomacy.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Performs related duties to support the student-focused mission of the unit.
+ Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with internal and external groups.
+ Other relevant duties as assigned by the Director.
Job Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree in journalism, business or a related field
+ Demonstrated experience in producing student publications, either as a student or as a professional.
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $55,300 - $59,892
