    Description

    Overview

    BookOps is the technical services collaboration of the New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library, and the Selection department is responsible for the selection and ordering of all circulating materials for both systems. The Supervising Librarian, Adult Collections & Special Projects works with the Adult Materials Coordinator, their fellow selectors, and many stakeholders across NYPL to support NYPL’s strategic collections initiatives and projects serving adults.

     

    This position is temporary for a 12-month period.

    Responsibilities

    + Evaluates and selects adult materials in both print and digital formats for NYPL collections and collections initiatives, including opening day collections and adult programming; supports unique collections like those at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, Yoseloff Business Center, and Career Services collections; and manages special funds from stakeholder projects, legislative grants, and other directed gifts.

    + Monitors allocated budgets for assigned grants, endowments, and directed gift funds to ensure responsible expenditure of these budgets, and coordinates special project expenditures with the general adult collections budget and spending plan.

    + Actively participates in a responsive and flexible model of centralized selection and collection development.

    + Works collaboratively to proactively identify current and emerging collection needs of our diverse communities and general trends in adult reading, as well as how they can be incorporated into NYPL’s special projects and initiatives.

    + Works with staff throughout NYPL to promote the collections to the libraries’ user communities.

    + Supports branch collection management activities, including ongoing collection assessment and circulation analysis.

    + Remains actively engaged in and curious about publishing for adults, staying up-to-date on trends and changes in all parts of the industry.

    + Provides ongoing training and support to colleagues on collection development and readers’ advisory as required.

    + Reviews organization of adult collections and makes recommendations to enhance discoverability and reader experience.

    + Serves on relevant committees.

    + Performs related duties as required.

     

    Required Education, Experience & Skills

    Required Education & Certifications

    + ALA-Accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science

    + Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York

    Required Experience

    + Relevant work experience with adult collections

    + Experience with Sierra Integrated Library System

    + Relevant experience in a library and/or technical services environment preferred.

    Required Skills

    + Knowledge of current practices and trends in collection management and development, including demonstrated experience with promoting and improving access, diversity, and representation in adult collections.

    + Knowledge of current major publishers and public library materials vendors, both physical and digital.

    + General knowledge of most or all types of material for adults, as well as deep knowledge of specific genres, audiences, and/or subjects.

    + Ability to problem solve and make thoughtful decisions in a collaborative and coordinated planning environment, as well as ability to prioritize.

    + Budget management experience.

    + Strong, demonstrated commitment to adult services and collections, including a keen understanding of the wide range of collections needs that must be met when serving a diverse range of adult readers.

    + Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

    + Demonstrated flexibility, reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.

    Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

    + This position does not have any direct reports, but indirectly supervises the work of Senior Collections Processing Associates. They do not hire or manage these colleagues, but they do provide training and work assignments as well as feedback.
