    Job Summary

    Join the Utah Data Coordinating Center ( DCC ) as a Data Architect, where your work will directly enable innovative clinical research at the University of Utah and across national partners. You’ll lead the design of scalable data systems, define and enforce architecture standards, and work alongside software developers, data analysts, and research teams to ensure our platforms evolve with the needs of scientific discovery. This is a growth-focused role ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. The Utah DCC supports large-scale health data infrastructure that underpins national emergency response, clinical registries, and federal research initiatives.

     

    The Data Architect will play a key role in designing and maintaining secure, scalable, and high-performance data infrastructure that supports the full range of research and operational activities at the Utah DCC . This includes developing and orchestrating modern data pipelines, integrating systems across research domains, and ensuring alignment with performance, security, and compliance standards. The Data Architect will lead the modernization of legacy data workflows to cloud-native architecture and evaluate emerging tools and frameworks to support future-state infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to work on diverse, high-impact projects in collaboration with software engineers, research faculty, and external partners.     Responsibilities

    As a Data Architect, your responsibilities will include:

    1. Data Architecture: The Data Architect will design, develop, and orchestrate reliable, scalable, and secure data pipelines from initial data extraction to final delivery. This includes data pipeline development and orchestration as well as data modeling.

    2. Developing and Maintaining ETL processes ( SSIS ): The role involves designing, developing, and maintaining ETL processes. This includes extracting data from various sources, transforming it according to business logic, and loading it into data warehouses or other storage solutions.

    3. Writing Ad-Hoc Queries and Stored Procedures (T- SQL ): The role requires proficiency in writing T- SQL queries to retrieve and analyze data and stored procedures. This includes writing complex queries for ad-hoc data requests, optimizing query and stored procedure performance, and ensuring data integrity.

    4. Data Security: Work with our operations team to help establish and enforce data security measures to ensure data meets compliance and regulatory standards and protects sensitive information.

    5. Troubleshooting and Performance Optimization: The Data Architect will monitor and optimize the performance of ETL processes, resolving any problems that arise during data processing pipelines

    6. Collecting Requirements and Documenting Processes: A key part of the role is liaising with business stakeholders to gather and understand their data storage requirements. This includes documenting business processes, data needs, and data pipeline specifications and communicating these requirements to other relevant team members for implementation.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) in a related area and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

    Preferences

    We will give preference to candidates with the following qualifications:

    + Familiarity with AWS (Glue, S3, EC2)

    + Experience with different versions of Microsoft SQL Server (T- SQL )

    + Development experience with Python (Pandas, Boto3, PySpark)

    + Experience with version control systems (Git)

    + Ability to read/understand Java is a plus

    + Experience using Jenkins

    + Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, SSRS , Power BI)

    + Background in data warehouse design (Star/Snowflake Schema)

    + In-depth understanding of database management systems, OLAP and ETL frameworks

    + Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills

    + Strong ability to explain advanced data concepts to fellow developers as well as non- technical end users

    + Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, balance multiple priorities, and ensure quality standards based on an Agile development process.
