Course Description

Students who apply will be considered for

+ 2 50% GSI positions in HEBREW 101: Elementary Modern Hebrew I

+ 1 50% GSI position in HEBREW 201. Intermediate Modern Hebrew I

HEBREW 101: Elementary Modern Hebrew I

HEBREW 101 is the first of a two-semester course in elementary level modern Hebrew. Students will learn the sounds and letters of Hebrew and learn to speak, read, write, and understand Hebrew at the Novice High to Intermediate Low level per ACTFL proficiency scale. By the end of the first semester, students will be able to talk about themselves and simple everyday life topics. Students will also be able to comprehend simple texts and multimedia material on everyday life topics. Students will gain an introductory grasp of cultural perspectives and ways of using the language via spoken modern Hebrew.

HEBREW 201 - Intermediate Modern Hebrew I

The course, which builds upon Hebrew 102, is the first of a two-semester course in Intermediate Modern Hebrew. The focus of instruction is on the development of advanced language skills with an emphasis on oral and written communication and in standard modern Hebrew. In addition to reading texts, relevant cultural materials are provided through the use of video and technology-based materials.

Responsibilities*

GSI assistants in the Hebrew Language Program support lecturers in recitation sections that meet four times per week. A 50% assistant will be assigned to one recitation section. Key responsibilities include assisting with course preparation, attending sections and helping with in-class exercises, assisting with course instructor when needed, proctoring quizzes and exams, grading, and holding regular office hours. GSIs will regularly attend coordination meetings with other members of the teaching team.

Students who have not previously been a GSI for the College of LSA will be required to attend the CRLT GSI Teaching Orientation before fall, and also attend the MES Department?s New GSI Orientation (date TBA).

Required Qualifications*

Native or advanced proficiency in Modern Hebrew. Interest in language teaching and pedagogy.

Desired Qualifications*

Native or near-native proficiency in Modern Hebrew; advanced proficiency in English. Undergraduate degree in Judaic Studies, Hebrew Language, Middle Eastern/Near Eastern Studies, Linguistics, or Education. Enrollment in a graduate program focused on Judaic/Hebrew studies. Previous experience in higher education instruction, preferably within the Department of Middle East Studies.
