    Position Summary:

    Directs and supervises a group of professional and technical Duke Energy individuals and contract land surveying firms in carrying out land surveys for right-of-way; property acquisitions; property disposals; route locations for transmission lines, distribution lines, and gas lines; engineering support; and construction staking for the entire corporation. This is accomplished through strategic planning and process/procedure development as well as managing the tactical execution of the established processes/procedures in order to create continuity between all the various regions of the corporation.

    Responsibilities :

    Leads the Land Surveying function for all of Duke Energy through directing and supervising a group of professional and technical people who are responsible for surveying, mapping, and legal interfacing for transmission, distribution, and gas lines, dam deformations, land acquisitions and disposals of Duke Energy assets.

     

    • Provides leadership to the group by setting an example for professionalism, customer service, and honest communications

    • Provides resources and tools for the group to complete their work effectively and to stay abreast of technology• Strategic planning for processes and procedures that are definitive yet flexible in order to support the various and ever-changing demands of our customers• Manages regionally located networks of professional service providers that are dedicated to meeting the demands of our customers• Manages the development, evaluation, and updates of a companywide mapping standards manual to ensure consistency of customer service and accuracy• Problem solving skills to address the concerns of our customers as well as the concerns of the survey project management staff• Selects and manages the qualified land surveying firms for the entire enterprise.

    Communicates effectively with teammates, customers, and management on survey project activities

    • Communicates in an honest, open, and professional manner Duke Energy and the team goals and objectives to each member of the team• Communicates priorities to teammates to ensure proper resources are being appropriately applied• Prepares written and verbal presentations to management concerning the status of surveying projects concerning budgets, timeliness, etc.• Owns and develops the relationship with business customers throughout the enterprise for land surveying and mapping.

     

    Provides the surveying & mapping expertise across all of Duke Energy and keeps abreast of changing technology to better support this organization

     

    • Testifies on Duke’s behalf in matters relating to condemnation, Duke lake issues, and boundary disputes• Attends seminars and training as necessary to maintain licenses and gain knowledge on new technology• Provides guidance in the maintenance of the historical records of the real estate documents of Duke Energy for a designated region in areas of maps, deeds, and rights-of-way• Maintains active role in professional surveying and related societies (Society of Surveyors, IRWA, and etc.).• Interfaces with Legal Department on matters pertaining to FERC, condemnation, and disposal of assets, legal proceedings, and other matters of law• Develops strategies for the implementation of new technological advancements in the surveying industry that will equate to cost savings and improved accuracies• Manages project cost by providing training on in-house estimates, establishing guidelines for competitive bidding vs. single sourcing, and approve larger vendor price quotes

    Develops and maintains a dedicated and motivated staff

    • Sets strategic vision for staff development through quantifying workloads, evaluating new vendors to supplement the Duke staff, and succession planning to insure a well trained work force for the future• Promotes good teammate relations and participates in the resolution of their problems and concerns• Provides specific guidance and direction to subordinates in the accomplishment of their goals and responsibilities• Oversees and monitors performance management and salary administration within the group to ensure consistency and equity• Conducts staff meetings and safety/health/environmental training to ensure compliance to procedures• Recommends employee training and development for subordinates• Enables the tactical execution of the management of survey projects through being a role model for safety, encouraging good communication skills, project cost control, and demanding quality results

    Required/Basic Qualifications :

    • Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geographic Information Science, Surveying and Topography or other related degree • In addition to required degree, 6 plus years related work experience • Professional Land Surveyor

    Working Conditions :

    • Office environment with some field or site visits required• Requires travel within all the various regions of the corporation
