    Job Description

    About the Office:

The Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) serves as a coordinator on criminal justice policy and operations. MOCJ develops and implements strategies, with partners inside and outside government, to reduce crime and incarceration and to promote fairness and legitimacy. MOCJ works with law enforcement, city agencies, non-profits, foundations, and others to implement data-driven strategies that address current crime conditions, prevent crime, and build the strong neighborhoods that ensure enduring safety.

    About the Role:

MOCJ Research Innovation is seeking a strategic, intellectually rigorous partner to deliver an ambitious research agenda focused on practical solutions in public safety and neighborhood stability solutions that resonate across different perspectives and deliver real results for New Yorkers from all walks of life.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Research Innovation, the Deputy ED of Research Innovation will manage a team working at the intersection of academic research, government policy, and community safety. In close partnership with the ED, this role will help shape and implement a research portfolio that bridges rigorous evidence with actionable insights, coordinating with high-level policymakers, community organizations, justice practitioners and justice-involved people, and cross-sector partners. Your work will help inform and support solutions that appeal to a wide range of constituencies grounded in shared values like safety, support and accountability, good governance, leveraging strengths and overcoming barriers, and family well-being.

The Deputy ED for Research Innovation’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Strategic Research Leadership

Design and steward a long-term, high-impact research agenda on public safety, neighborhood resilience, and systems-level interventions

Identify emerging trends, policy gaps, and unifying opportunities for effective innovation in public safety

Translate complex evidence into insights and tools that can inform both policy development and public understanding

    Team Management & Execution

Lead day-to-day administration of a multidisciplinary research team: guide project design, ensure quality, and foster professional development

Develop project workplans and budgets, coordinating with internal staff and leadership, and external partners, to ensure alignment with key strategic priorities.

Manage internal and external research partnerships, including with academic institutions, think tanks, city agencies, and community organizations, including managing key aspects of the contracting process with providers who are partnering with MOCJ on research initiatives (e.g. scope and budget materials, and supporting providers in navigating City procurement systems).

    High-Level Stakeholder Coordination

Serve as a liaison for government and community partners to identify opportunities and gaps and generate data-driven and evidence-based solutions that align with their needs and Mayoral goals, including violence reduction and community safety.

Coordinate across departments to align research strategy with real-time implementation and policy windows

Present findings and recommendations in compelling formats for both technical and non-technical audiences
