    Herkimer College is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Director of Campus Safety.

     

    The selected candidate is the Chief administrator for Safety & Security of the Herkimer College campus, including the HCCC Housing Corporation property. Also, directly supervises the campus safety personnel in the enforcement of State and Federal laws and College rules and regulations for the enforcement and safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors of Herkimer County Community College.

    Major Responsibilities:

    + Managing, supervising and evaluating all campus safety personnel.

    + Schedule and assign personnel to vehicle, foot patrols and bicycles in order to effectively and efficiently utilize the staff.

    + Schedule and provide coverage for special functions and other periods of peak demands for law enforcement services.

    + Personally brief and/or provide written instruction to safety personnel in preparation for shift assignments.

    + Make regular tours of the campus and directly observe safety personnel on the job to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of their performance.

    + Personally respond to the scenes of incidents involving major accidents, injuries or disturbances. Will function as the campus Disaster Coordinator during major incidents or crises on campus. Additionally, is one of the primary personnel responsible for coordinating campus and/or system Mass Notifications via NYAlert, Alertus and use of the Campus Emergency Siren.

    + Act as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer on campus. Has primary responsibility for determining when to contact outside agencies for assistance.

    + Prepare a variety of written reports of safety activities.

    + Conduct safety inspections of facilities and fire drills as required by local codes, for Campus and Housing.

    + Maintain records and manage college activities which involve state and federal laws, rules and regulations. Is also responsible for Clery Act reporting of statistics and the ASR (Annual Security and Fire Report).

    + Develop and conduct training sessions for safety personnel in all phases of their work.

    + Conduct investigations of all campus safety related incidents.

    + Chairperson of the Campus Safety Committee.

    + Together with the Dean of Students, conduct annual reviews of the Student Code of Conduct.

    + Counsel students and parents in cases of alleged student misconduct.

    + Serve as a hearing officer for alleged infractions of the Student Code of Conduct.

    + Assist with the reconciliation of student/parental complaints.

    + Meet regularly with students, faculty and staff

    + Interface with local police, fire protection and other agencies as required.

    + Training of College safety rules and regulations for new and existing College Personnel.

    + All other duties as assigned

    Assists with:

    + The Judicial Review Board

    + All other work as assigned by the Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance.

    Cooperates with:

    + Maintain a positive relationship with all segments of the campus community to obtain their support and cooperation in conducting successful public safety program.

    + Maintain a positive relationship with all Herkimer County Law Enforcement agencies including the Herkimer County District Attorney s office, Village of Herkimer Police Department, New York State Police and the Emergency Services Office (911 Center). Take part in Herkimer County Chiefs monthly meetings and Herkimer County Investigators meetings as needed.

    + Maintain a positive relationship with the Village of Herkimer Fire Department and Department of Public Works.

    Job Requirements:

    Minimum Experience and Educational Background:

    + Graduation from a regionally accredited or N.Y. State registered four (4) year college or university with a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice or similar major, and one (1) year of supervisory experience

    + Graduation from a regionally accredited or N.Y. State registered two (2) year college or university with an associates degree in Security Management or Criminal Justice and three (3) years of full-time experience in a law enforcement or investigative position, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

    + An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of #1 and #2.

    + Demonstrates knowledge of security procedures, codes, safety standards and crime prevention techniques. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques of supervision and performance evaluation. Good knowledge of current labor contracts as they apply to the day-to-day supervision of Campus Safety Officers.

    + Ability to understand the feelings people express in their speech, mannerisms, expressions and actions as they affect the conduct of safety and security. Ability to respond to feelings and initiate adaptive social behavior in the campus community by careful and concise explanation and persuasion. Proven background in safety and security procedures.

    + Ability to understand, interpret and carry out written directions, ability to prepare clear, accurate and comprehensive factual written reports, and ability to remain cool and decisive in emergency and stress situations. CPR certification and knowledge of emergency first aid procedures.

    + In addition to meeting the above qualifications, the Director will also be required to meet established medical and physical training standards, and possess a valid New York State driver's license.

    + Must meet qualifications to be a sworn DCJS (Department of Criminal Justice Services) certified Campus Peace Officer, including the ability to obtain a NYS pistol permit.

    Additional Information:

    Salary range: $77,170 - $115,754 (commensurate with qualifications and experience).
