    Responsibilities

    Description of General Duties:

    + The Automotive Worker performs a variety of minor repairs and services to maintain motor vehicles.

    + The Automotive Worker places and maintains decals on vehicles, checks and replaces batteries, rotates, repairs, and replaces tires, washes, polishes, and cleans interiors and exteriors of vehicles, drains, flushes, and replaces engine, transmission, and differential grease and oils, checks, cleans, calibrates, and replaces spark plugs, cleans and replaces oil and air filters.

    + The Automotive Worker adjusts brakes, replaces windshield wipers, and similar minor parts, assists on major overhaul jobs by disassembling and cleaning parts, repairing components such as generators and water pumps, and replacing thermostats, points, electrical wiring and other items, maintains tools and equipment, and cleans work areas.

    + May be required to assist in overhauling major assemblies or automobiles, light trucks and ATV’s.

    + Other work includes diagnosing trouble and determining the extent of repairs required. This activity may lead to replacement or repair of brakes, carburetor, fuel systems, cooling systems, lighting, and ignitions systems. Works from both verbal and written instructions.

    + Assesses work orders; observes and listens to vehicles in operation to determine malfunctions; and plans work procedures accordingly. Applies knowledge to electrical, power transmissions, brakes, and other automotive systems. Installs ignition systems, aligns front wheels, changes or recharges batteries, and replaces transmissions and other parts using hand tools and repair manuals. Lubricates moving parts, changes oil and transmission fluids, replaces brake linings and pads, windshield wipers, headlamps, taillights, belts and hoses.

    + Test drives repaired vehicles.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education Requirements:

    + High School Diploma or equivalent

    Minimum Experience Requirements:

    + Two years’ experience repairing/maintaining vehicles.

    + Ability to speak, read, and write English.

    Minimum Position-Specific Training Required:

    + Formal technical or vocational automotive mechanical training classes.

    + Possess a valid state Driver’s license.

    Certification Requirements:

    + EPA Required Certification Training

    Citizenship and Security Clearance Requirements:

    + US Citizen

    + Obtain and maintain the appropriate level of clearance

    Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

    + Automotive workers make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Occasionally, they move moderately heavy items with assistance or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 23 kilograms (50 pounds).

    + Performs work both inside and outside, possibly under extreme conditions. Work normally involves greasy and dirty conditions. Personnel must be physically able to move and lift items as part of the daily requirements of the job.

    + The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Automotive workers occasionally perform work outside under adverse weather conditions. They are continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators.

    + Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties for extended periods of time. Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
