    Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventative maintenance, repair and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work and operation of heavy equipment. Work may require lifting up to 50 lbs repeatedly. This position is subject to Emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    These listed Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are management preferences and list work experience that demonstrates the following:

    •Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, and construction procedures.

    •Working knowledge of Work Zone safety and Workplace safety policies.

    •Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver , skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)

    •Experience in one of the following: ditch maintenance or asphalt patching, pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal.

     

    Position will require climbing, bending and walking on uneven terrain. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays and times of emergency.

     

    The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

    Minimum Education and Experience High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
