Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Worker level 2 within the Stokes County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate a variety of road building and road maintenance equipment, both on and off road. Duties include driving heavy equipment and vehicles with adjustable attachments to sweep debris from paved surfaces, mow grass and weeds, remove snow and ice, and apply salt and/or salt brine. This position will drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites and drive trucks or truck-mounted equipment; haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay material to fill washouts, and repair road shoulders; spread sand, dirt, or other loose materials onto surfaces; move spoil materials to locations where needed; dump, spread, and tamp asphalt, using pneumatic tampers to repair joints and patch broken pavement; dump materials into or on designated areas; compact materials to create level bases; spread concrete or other aggregate mixtures; clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drainage structures; remove debris or vegetation with equipment from work sites; remove litter and debris from roadways, including debris from rock and mud slides; inspect industrial or commercial equipment to ensure proper operation; and operate equipment or vehicles to clear construction sites or move materials. This position will also use hand tools such as chain saw, rake, bush axe, shovel, power tamp and concrete saw.
This position will perform various manual tasks as directed, associated with maintenance and repair of the highway system. This includes asphalt and/or concrete pavement maintenance, drainage ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation/replacement/repair, vegetation control, debris removal, and storm response. Position will perform flagging operations and facilitate work zone traffic control. These duties require the understanding and performance of erosion control devices, two-way radio communication, and basic work zone traffic Controls. Applicant must have the ability to plan, develop, and lay out traffic control in a work zone for 2-lane roads. Position is expected to respond to emergencies, including snow and ice, and other maintenance emergencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
+ Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
+ Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
+ Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher,
crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid
steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
+ Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch
maintenance or asphalt patching.
+ Experience in snow and ice removal operations

Safety-toed shoes required.
This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
