The Youth Sports Specialist will develop and implement structured programs and strategies that integrate athletic skill development with personal growth and academic achievement. The Youth Sports Specialist will help create a safe and supportive environment to enrich the lives of young people on the Lower East Aide within the Edgies Teen Center.
Job Title: Youth Sports Specialist
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Teen Center Director
FT/PT Status: Part-Time (25hrs/week) Tues-Fri 1pm-6:00pm, Saturdays 3pm-6pm
Job Purpose:
Creating a safe and supportive environment to enrich the lives of young people on the Lower East Side. Supporting teens social emotional development to enhance their well-being and help them thrive
Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Build relationships with youth that are positive and professional
+ Provide guidance and support to youth in their personal and social development
+ Collaborates regularly with staff to design and promote an inclusive teen center culture, such as bullying prevention, student leadership opportunities, mentoring, training, and conferences.
+ Confidently engage in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and mediations with youth
+ Establish and model expectations for behavior and participation/engagement to ensure a safe and positive environment.
+ Participate alongside program participants when appropriate and provide active supervision throughout activities.
+ Attends and participates in professional development to improve and maintain knowledge of positive youth development evidence-based strategies and theories.
+ Ability to work cooperatively with all stakeholders including professional staff and other departments
+ Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions and special events
+ Communicates information about sports related youth development opportunities, including community-sponsored programming to students, families, and school staff.
+ Plans, models, and co-leads effective workshops with program coaches and mentors covering topics such as nutrition, time management, mental health and career planning as it relates to sports
+ Develop and implement structured programs and strategies that integrate athletic skill development with personal growth and academic achievement.
+ Design drills, exercises, and training sessions aimed at fostering and enhancing the development of new athletic skills in youth, while reinforcing skills/information previously taught.
+ Provide personalized coaching and mentoring to student athletes, focusing on their unique needs and goals.
+ Conduct regular assessments and evaluations to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
+ Develop recognition activities to highlight student successes
+ Maintain school-based reports to support program evaluation assessment as related to sports involvement
+ Scheduling and running team practice sessions and games, setting realistic and age-appropriate expectations, ensuring equal play time, and safety of all participants.
+ Maintaining sports equipment.
+ Provide other program support as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
To effectively perform this role, an incumbent should have the following knowledge, skills:
+ Previous experience working with teenagers in an educational or recreational setting is highly desirable.
+ Ability to engage and manage a group of teens effectively.
+ Fundamental and developmental knowledge as it relates to sports and recreations
+ Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting teen development .
+ Experience playing basketball on a professional level (collegiate)
+ Experiencing coaching youth in sports

To effectively perform this role, an incumbent should have the following minimum education/certifications/licenses:
+ Education: BA Degree preferred and/or minimum 2 years of experience of coaching youth athletics.
+ Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire.
