Description of Job
This position reports to the Early Education Center Coordinator and is responsible for providing standards-based instruction and support to children (and their families), Preschool to sixth grade, who are Deaf and who may have additional needs. Utilizes Colorado Academic Standards and benchmarks in establishing instructional goals; and provides assessments that monitor student progress, in a safe and civil school environment.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs work associated with facilitating developmentally appropriate instruction and support to children and their families: perform student assessments and identify family needs for instruction and/or support, lead and contribute to the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for assigned students and their families, prepare and implement instructional activities with necessary accommodations based on the IEP, coordinate with other agencies involved with the family.
- Performs work associated with standards-based instruction; prepares lesson plans, develops input for and presents daily instructional/learning activities based upon the IEP and school reform tenets under the direction of the Early Education Center Coordinator, maintains a positive learning environment utilizing appropriate positive behavior support strategies, keeps students on task and engaged in learning
- Demonstrates knowledge / skill in the areas of early education / bilingual education / family services, in the development and u s e of accommodations for children who are Deaf and family assessment, task analysis, assessment, progress monitoring, behavior management. Organization / planning, curriculum development, current technology practices, parent relations and teamwork.
- Utilizes technology to model, teach, and assist students relative to instruction and activities
- Works as part of the education / assessment team responsible for identifying, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating individual objectives for assigned students including language planning.
- Utilizes appropriate communication skills with a commitment to literacy development in each student.
- Serves as a Student / Family Advocate for assigned students / families.
- Coordinates effectively with other service staff in facilitating instruction, supporting school reform efforts, strategic planning, and positively contributing to co-curricular activities.
- Positively serves as a team member in the Outreach Programs, and of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole; and participates in regular team and departmental meetings, school and instructional meetings as required.
- Encourages family engagement; participates in and coordinates selected parent-focused activities, etc.
- Seeks opportunities for and participates in activities related to professional development and training/workshops as appropriate.
- Works as part of the full early childhood team to plan, facilitate and support success of the CSDB Preschool programs.
- Works as part of the early childhood team to plan, facilitate, and support the CSDB bilingual /bimodal program.
- Works in collaboration with the Bilingual Teacher of the Deaf for IEP meetings, student transitions, and aids in IEP success through appropriate assessments, including language planning, language acquisition, goal development, and follow-through of the IEP.
- Works in collaboration with the Bilingual Teacher of the Deaf for development and implementation of a multilingual-multi-modal preschool program to optimize language exposure to both ASL and spoken language development.
- Provide bilingual support (ASL/English) through supplemental spoken language instruction, aligning with each child's IEP and language development plan.
- Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in Education from a regionally accredited college or university, with preference given to specialization in Deaf Education
- Must hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist: Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing: preference given to added endorsement in Early Childhood. Elementary Education Subject area endorsement or specialization may be required.
- Must hold, be eligible for, or able to obtain within two (2) years from hire, appropriate qualifications to meet Colorado preschool licensure requirements.
- Experience teaching / working with children and families in an educational environment with students who are Deaf and/or have multiple disabilities.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy / procedures.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledge and skill in best practices for facilitating developmentally appropriate instruction to children and their family
- Knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational practices associated with young students who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing to a variety of settings and services.
- Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to email, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, learning management systems, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB.
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively adapt and apply teaching skills, learning environment management and lesson preparation to a technology-rich environment, which may include but is not limited to on-site classroom, telepresence, and multiple distance education technologies and delivery modes; ability to effectively implement technology necessary to model, teach, and assist learners relative to instruction and activities
- Knowledge of literacy development, instruction, and intervention for students in American Sign Language {ASL), Multi- Lingual/Multi-Modal, and in spoken English environments
- Ability to establish high standards for what students must know and be able to do.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing.
- Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team-teaching environment.
- Knowledge of an ASL/English Bilingual/Bimodal educational philosophy
- Knowledge of Deaf culture, history, and audism awareness in an educational setting
- Strong, positive interpersonal skills
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Full Time; scheduled to work the standard number of days in the academic year (as per the established School Calendar, currently 195 days, August to June).
- The annual base salary shall be established pursuant to the Teacher Salary Schedule, based upon appropriate education and experience.
- Employment is at-will, with no actual, expressed, or implied contract.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Generally speaking, the work is performed in a typical school office environment and involves sedentary to light physical activity, requiring exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Typically, workers are required to climb stairs, bend, reach, and handle objects, and use fingers to operate computer and/or keyboard. Work requires expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information. Work requires ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate data information; ability to instruct / train others; and ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills/ behaviors.

The position of Teacher of the Deaf is assigned to work with students, staff and others who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing and requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced skill level or above, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures. Please check one box below to describe / indicate your current level of ASL proficiency.
+ SUPERIOR - Able to have a fully shared conversation, with in-depth elaboration for both social and work topics.
+ ADVANCED - Able to have a generally shared conversation with good, spontaneous elaboration for both social and work topics.
+ INTERMEDIATE - Able to discuss with some confidence routine social and work topics within a conversational format with some elaboration; generally 3-5 sentences in length.
