POSITION SUMMARY:
Value Chain Optimization is seeking a motivated employee with interest in scheduling intermediate products into & out of the refinery, while working closely with business partners to identify and advance optimization opportunities. This position works across organizations, including but not limited to MPLX, Commercial Scheduling, Commercial Planning & Optimization, and Refinery Products Control. The ideal candidate should be a strong communicator with interest in learning refinery economics and MPC’s commercial side of the business.
VCO views this as a growth opportunity for an employee seeking to gain knowledge in refinery logistics & economics, as well as the commercial side of the business. This position is located in Texas City, TX, and will report directly to Economics & Planning Manager – GBR.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary responsibilities include planning/scheduling products (distillates and gasoils) out of the refinery, and planning and scheduling process units, while working closely with internal and external business partners to ensure value chain optimization.
Other responsibilities include LP runs to develop cost of production or feedstock break evens, collaboration with Marketing, supporting projects that advance commercial flexibility and profitability, and collaborating and supporting the Products Control group.
Additional Responsibilities:
+ Coordinates the commercial aspects of refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
+ Demonstrates a fundamental understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics. Develops and communicates strategies that capture missed opportunities and closes production optimization gaps.
+ Assists in collaboration meetings with the value chain to discuss both local and regional economic drivers.
+ Develops optimized and executable production plans for a single refinery using linear programming simulation models. Modifies production plans as needed to adjust to demand/margin changes. Identifies constraints associated with refinery modeling, uses provided input to develop refinery plans.
+ Conducts detailed analysis of buy-or-make options, considering factors such as cost, quality, supply chain implications, and market dynamics. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to gather relevant data and insights.
+ Assists in developing decision-making frameworks and presenting findings to stakeholders.
+ Analyzes historical refinery data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to validate data accuracy and completeness. Assists in developing backcast models and scenarios to evaluate past performance and identify optimization opportunities.
+ Demonstrates understanding of refinery operations and commercial aspects of projects. Able to analyze data, identify issues, and propose solutions with guidance. Collaborates with team members to execute project support tasks effectively.
+ Understands local refinery deliverables and can effectively manage with support of others. Understands how scheduling tools/processes work and is trained on APS to develop local refinery plans
+ Cross trains on other desks and supports team vacation coverage needs and weekend coverage rotation
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
+ Three (3) years relevant experience. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience is preferred.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required
+ Aspen Scheduling (Orion/APS) proficiency desired, but not required
