UPMC Presbyterian is seeking an experienced **Lead Pharmacist** to oversee investigational drug services during a time of program expansion and system enhancement. This role offers the opportunity to coordinate investigational drug operations, implement advanced clinical research systems, and ensure compliance with dynamic regulatory standards- contributing directly to advancing both patient outcomes and research excellence.
Position Summary
As the Lead Pharmacist, you will support clinical trials, pharmacy operations, and interdisciplinary research across our academic medical center. Reporting to the Pharmacy Director, you will work closely with investigators, research coordinators, and pharmacy staff to ensure the safe, compliant, and efficient management of investigational drug services. This is a highly collaborative role that emphasizes teamwork, clear communication, and a shared commitment to advancing clinical research.
We welcome candidates who are detail-oriented, adaptable, and experienced in clinical trial protocols, investigational drug accountability, and regulatory documentation. A strong working knowledge of the regulations, standards, and guidelines governing pharmacy practice and clinical trial procedures is essential. Responsibilities:
+ Coordinate and Supervise Staff: Direct daily activities of pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, manage schedules, authorize overtime, and provide coaching and performance evaluations.
+ Workflow Optimization: Develop and implement policies, procedures, and tools to standardize practices and improve productivity.
+ Collaborative Leadership: Work closely with pharmacy managers, lead technicians, and healthcare teams to evaluate workflows and implement service improvements.
+ Quality and Compliance: Support quality improvement initiatives, ensure compliance with JCAHO indicators, and maintain accurate records for controlled substances.
+ Clinical Oversight: Review medication orders for appropriateness, apply pharmacokinetic principles, and consult with prescribers as needed.
+ Education and Mentorship: Train pharmacy staff, interns, and students; participate in the education of healthcare professionals.
+ Inventory and Financial Accountability: Ensure adequate drug inventory, assist with procurement, and manage third-party billing issues.
+ Research Support: Assist with drug-related research, including study drug management and coordination.
+ Professional Development: Maintain competency through continuing education and contribute to departmental goals and patient care outcomes.
+ System-Wide Standards: Adhere to organizational competencies and perform additional duties as assigned.
+ B.S. degree or a Pharm.D. degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy required.
+ Minimum 5 years post licensure Pharmacist experience required.
Experience and Preferences
+ **Licensure & Education**
+ Active pharmacist licensure in the State of Pennsylvania.
+ Completion of PGY1 and/or PGY2 residency (preferably with a focus on investigational drugs and research pharmacy), or a minimum of 3 years of experience in investigational drug services or clinical trial research.
+ **Certifications**
+ Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification (e.g., BCPS, BCOP).
+ Training Investigational Drug Services, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI)
+ **Technical & Regulatory Expertise**
+ Proficiency with clinical trial management systems and digital platforms supporting research workflows.
+ Knowledge of clinical trial protocols, investigational drug accountability, and regulatory standards (Federal, state, USP <795>, <797>, <800>, Joint Commission)
+ **Leadership & Communication**
+ Supervisory or leadership experience in a hospital or research setting.
+ Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and timelines effectively.
