    The Program in Media at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, invites applications for an assistant teaching professor. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible faculty position. The successful candidate will (1) show promise as a teacher of courses in Media Studies; (2) demonstrate knowledge of recent evidence-based advances in pedagogical practices; (3) show potential for effective advising and mentorship of undergraduate students; and (4) be willing to participate actively in the Program through service.

     

    The multidisciplinary Program in Media Studies offers an undergraduate major and minor, both of which combine critical study of film and media history and theory with creative work in media production, from film to podcasts. The major’s gateway courses include Introduction to Media Studies and Introduction to Film Studies, and then students take courses in three elective areas: film history and aesthetics; media and cultural theory; and media production. The major culminates in an experiential capstone in which students pursue applied research, media production, and/or internship opportunities. The ideal assistant teaching professor candidate will teach courses of their own design across the introductory, elective, and capstone levels.

    Responsibilities

    - Teach six 3-credit, semester-long courses per year to undergraduate students.

     

    - Ensure courses are accessible and hold broad appeal to students in Media Studies and other fields.

     

    - Contribute to the core curriculum of the Media Studies major.

     

    - Help build a more vibrant and student-centered major through extracurricular and pedagogical programming.

     

    - Contribute to the ongoing review and development of the undergraduate curriculum in Media Studies.

    Requirements

    - Ph.D. degree in Media Studies or related field, or have the Ph.D. degree in Media Studies or related field conferred by July 1, 2026.
