Summary This position is located within the Facilities Management Service Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, TX. This position is responsible for the air conditioning and boiler plant operation and maintenance. Responsibilities Identify problems and provides solutions that will increase productivity, reduce costs, improve skills utilization, and improve customer relationships. Assist in the operation, inspections, preventive/predictive maintenance and repair work as it applies to a wide range of high complex and critical utilities systems, and associated building automation systems. Works closely with the USO Supervisor, General Energy Manager, Manager, Engineering Section, in all phases of energy usage, energy savings, and energy data inputting. Responsible for the air conditioning and boiler plant operation and maintenance. Performs minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs. Determines the nature and extent of the repair by checking for malfunctions, voltage, amperage, and current of electronic equipment. Work Schedule: TBD - 12-hour rotation shifts. The Plant must be manned 24/7. (Subject to change based on the needs of the agency) Position Description Title/PD#: Utility Systems Operator/PD03390A Physical Requirements: Must be physically and mentally alert at all times. Incumbent will not have any existing limiting bone, joint, muscle or tendon physical restrictions. The position requires lifting, carrying, pulling/pushing and steadying adjustments or repairs and may require kneeling, bending, squatting, reaching over, under and into equipment while in cramped or awkward positions. Employees exerts considerable physical effort by walking, climbing stairs and working off ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Maybe be required to carry objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes some of which weigh up to 50 pounds. Must have good eyesight with or without corrective lenses and not be colorblind. Working Conditions: The work requires exposure to temperature extremes, drafts, and to stand, kneel or bend while working in dampness and water. Work also requires incumbent to be exposed to noise, vibration, gases, fumes, dust, grease and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces. Incumbent will be subjected to a 24-hour calls. Plant operator shall be called upon to perform other miscellaneous functions as needed so as to attain safe and efficient plant operation as directed by patient care and primary goal of the medical center. Employee may be exposed to noise levels exceeding 85dBA for up to eight hours/day. This exposure may adversely affect hearing. The wearing of ear protective devices while in the Boiler Plant and Air Conditioning Plant is mandatory as participation in the Hearing Conversation Program. Employee must be able to hear while wearing ear protection at a level to safely perform assigned duties. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
