Job Description
The Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement reports to the Assistant Dean of Students for the Cisneros Institute for Emerging Leaders. Through the strategic lenses of engagement, programming, and impact, the Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement oversees the creation and implementation of leadership programs and initiatives that addresses real-world issues and problems relevant to the local community and beyond. The Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement is tasked with creating a multi-faceted, integrated pipeline of engagement programs that connects leadership development to community needs. In collaboration with other Texas A&M University-San Antonio departments, the Director establishes student engagement and leadership opportunities that enhance personal growth or capacity building as a foundation for ethical action, and self-advocacy throughout their lives.
The Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement is responsible for external engagement, providing a public presence of the institution as a viable leadership training entity for current students as well as community members. In addition, this position will provide opportunities to facilitate partnerships, collaborations, and research as it relates to thought leadership and social change.
This Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement is responsible for the planning, directing and assessment of the operations of the department, including but not limited to the overall coordination of an array of student leadership programs such as the Terwilliger Distinguished Lecture Series, Emerging Leaders Certificate Programs, President’s Leadership Class, Annual Cisneros Leadership Conference, Clifton Strengths, and leadership cohorts, such as, Texas Leadership Scholars and Lopez Scholars.
The Director of Student Leadership and Commuter Engagement typically works Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. This position may work beyond normal office hours to include evenings, weekends, and peak times, as needed.
Salary: $65,000 annually
Responsibilities:
+ Collaborates across campus constituencies to align co-curricular programming in student leadership development and to facilitate a coordinated approach for leadership development opportunities.
+ Approaches problems and issues challenging communities and develops problem solving and thought leadership actions through engagement, programming and impact to address these issues.
+ Creates strategic partnerships with local, state, and national agencies/organizations to promote the certificate programs, study-away, leadership academies, summits, leadership corps and/or targeted skill development.
+ Designs leadership-focused programs such as speaker series, academies, workshops or other activities through strategic partnerships with local, state, national and international organizations.
+ Communicates and articulates the role of leadership development programs effectively with multicultural populations verbally and in writing.
+ Works with faculty and staff experts to support the development of specialty curricular and co-curricular offerings for certificate programs in Leadership Development.
+ Collaborates with other departments to align and execute Leadership Awards and other recognition programs.
+ Provides administrative leadership including supervision of staff, administering departmental budget, overseeing fiscal operations of the department, conducting assessment, serving on committees and other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Ten (10) years of related experience in student activities or related field.
Preferred Education and Experience:
+ Master's degree in Leadership or related field.
+ Ph.D. or Ed.D. or terminal degree.
+ Ten (10) years of administrative experience in higher education, preferably in student affairs.
+ Expert knowledge of student development theories, co-curricular development, learning outcomes and ability to lead assessment.
+ Experience with program design and implementation, facilitation, experience delivering training and/or speaking in front of audiences.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
+ Strong skills in decision making, communication, interpersonal and intercultural relation.
+ Ability to collaborate and work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds in daily work activity.
+ Ability to monitor and assess the effectiveness of programs and recommend modifications as necessary.
+ Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to gather and analyze date, develop reports, multi-task, take initiative, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
+ Project management skills including demonstrated skills in managing multiple projects and programs.
+ Proven ability to balance the strategic needs of the program with tactical day-to-day activities.
+ Must have ingenuity and creativity along with an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to take initiative.
