General Function
The Visiting Assistant Professor is a non-tenure track position held by an individual who possesses all the qualifications to be appointed at that rank or who has held that rank at another institution. The Visiting Assistant Professor’s teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor.
Description of Primary Duties
The successful candidate will teach courses in composition and music theory at the undergraduate and graduate level including sophomore theory and aural skills, Instrumentation, and Introduction to Commercial Music, advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate composition students, and may be assigned other responsibilities as departmental need and load dictate.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook.
Additional Qualifications
Terminal degree in music required ( DMA or PhD). Candidates who are ABD may be considered. Candidates must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in composition and teaching and have a record of, or clear potential for, distinguished scholarship, compositional output, and student mentorship. The candidate is expected to possess communication and interpersonal skills to work with and develop working relationships with colleagues and students.
