    Work Unit|Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories

    Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( VDL ) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory processes over 120,000 accessions per year. The laboratory performs approximately 1,400 necropsies on a variety of domestic and exotic animals each year and evaluates over 30,000 histopathological slides for animal owners, veterinarians, and researchers.

    Position Summary

    We are searching to fill a Clinical Pathology Diagnostic Pathologist position. The position will be hired as a non-student hourly with responsibilities for the diagnostic clinical pathology samples seen through the CSU clinical pathology service. This service has a high case load with access to multiple advanced testing modalities (immunocytochemical and other special staining, PARR and flow cytometry through the Clinical Hematopathology service as well as advanced coagulation testing and protein electrophoresis).

     

    The position will interact with board-certified clinical pathologists and clinical pathology residents/graduate degree students. Pay rate is commensurate with the diagnostic service nature of the position.

     

    The applicant should be responsible and able to work both independently and in a team environment. This position is required to provide accurate and timely veterinary pathology diagnoses for multiple species and requires attention to detail, organization, and excellent analytical, problem solving and communication skills (written and oral). This position is required to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent) and be board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists ( ACVP ).

    Examples of decision making include the following:

    - Evaluation of diagnostic cases as a board-certified clinical pathologist

     

    - Consulting on cases – discussing cases with submitting veterinarian and using clinical presentation and diagnostic results to provide interpretation and consult on diagnostic options

     

    - Determination of best sample types and tests to conduct for diagnostic cases

     

    - Integration of results with ancillary diagnostics

     

    - Ability to complete a professional diagnostic report with accurate evaluation and diagnosis

     

    - Interact positively with lab personnel in to guide specimen processing, client concerns/questions and other veterinary procedures

    Position Minimum Qualifications

    + Qualified candidates will have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (or equivalent) and be board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists ( ACVP )

    + Candidates must have or be eligible for a Colorado academic veterinary license.

    + Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of experience working as a diagnostic pathologist at a specialized institution such as a university veterinary diagnostic laboratory

    Duty/Responsibility

    This position will be focused on cytopathology service. Including, but not limited to, the following:

     

    - Interpretation of fine needle aspirate, cavity fluid, joint fluid, and bone marrow cytology samples

     

    - Interpretation of hematology specimens, protein electrophoresis and immunofixation results

     

    - Interpretation of biochemistry, urinalysis, and coagulation panels

     

    This position is expected to be able to read 30-35 cases per day, within an 8-hour period.
