    UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the Women's Hospital!

     

    Make a meaningful impact as a NICU nurse, delivering expert, compassionate care to premature and critically ill newborns in a fast-paced, highly specialized environment. You’ll monitor vital signs, manage ventilators and IVs, support family bonding, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes. Our NICU nurses educate and comfort families and uphold the highest standards of safety and developmental care.     This position is full-time, rotating shift hours. Holiday and weekend coverage required.

    **Purpose:** The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who plays a vital role on the care delivery team, holding responsibility, authority, and accountability for providing high-quality nursing care. This role involves managing patient care for individuals and their families through independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with the healthcare team. The nurse sets the standard for care, demonstrating leadership, partnership, and supervision while fostering strong, collaborative relationships with physicians, other providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes. Additionally, the Professional Staff Nurse is committed to both the nursing profession and the broader community, embodying the values of compassionate, patient-centered care throughout the continuum of care.

    Responsibilities:

    + Actively participates in unit-specific quality improvement initiatives. Identifies and communicates opportunities for quality improvement.

    + Takes personal responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction and care quality.

    + Uses research and evidence-based practice to support clinical improvements. Applies the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create healing environments.

    + Develops daily patient goals and holistic care plans in partnership with patients. Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical and psychosocial issues.

    + Communicates effectively with care team and advocates for patient care changes. Maintains comprehensive documentation to support caregiver communication.

    + Aligns care with national standards and organizational goals for safety and quality. Builds compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.

    + Maintains productive internal and external working relationships. Demonstrates cultural awareness and promotes healthy peer relationships.

    + Balances work and personal life; models time management and safe work habits.

    + Reports workplace safety hazards to peers and management. Takes accountability for professional development and improving patient care. Participates in shared governance, goal setting, and change initiatives.

    + Acts as a collaborative and responsive care team member. Adapts to change and supports transitions in care and practice.

    + Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, and staff. Provides thorough education to guide patients through care transitions.

    + Supports development of students and new staff; may serve as a preceptor. Encourages open dialogue and continuous improvement through feedback.

    + Must demonstrate knowledge and skills to care for patients across the lifespan, based on unit-specific age requirements.

    + Understands growth and development principles and can assess and interpret age-specific patient data.

    + Provides care aligned with department policies and age-specific needs.

    + 1–2 years of experience required. BSN required.

    + Ability to build and maintain positive, caring relationships with all levels of staff and patients/families.

    + Capable of working effectively in complex, fast-paced environments with shifting priorities. Proficient in using specialized medical equipment.

    + Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Able to lead others in applying the nursing process.

    + Requires mobility, manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.

    + UPMC offers flexible scheduling options, including night/weekend shift programs with premium pay (requires 6+ months of nursing experience and may include orientation during regular hours). Interested candidates should inform their recruiter if they want to be considered for these special shift programs.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

    + Registered Nurse (RN) Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.

    + UPMC approved national certification preferred.

    *Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
