    UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join the NICU!

     

    This position is full-time, rotating day and night shifts. Weekend and holiday coverage required.

     

    Overview: The Patient Care Technician in the NICU supports nursing staff by stocking supplies, maintaining emergency equipment, and cleaning and preparing equipment for use. They greet and interact with families compassionately, helping to create a supportive environment. Working closely with the care team, the PCT contributes to safe, efficient, and compassionate care for our newborn patients

    Responsibilities:

    + Assist with patient care, procedures, and daily living activities.

    + Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

    + Report patient status changes and provide feedback to RNs.

    + Perform core nursing assistant duties: blood glucose, weights, vitals, I&O, specimen collection, Foley care.

    + Competent in at least four advanced tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressings, Foley/IV catheter removal, bladder scan, straight catheter, point-of-care testing.

    + Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with departments.

    + Maintain respectful, professional relationships and contribute to unit activities (e.g., call lights, phones, meal trays, patient transport).

    + Accept feedback, identify learning needs, and seek help with prioritizing tasks.

    + Educate patients/families under RN direction; apply/remove restraints per protocol.

    + Communicate clearly with healthcare team; understand cultural diversity and workplace safety.

    + Follow all patient care and hospital policies, including safety and standard precautions.

    + Support departmental changes, projects, and quality initiatives.

    + Document care accurately and perform clerical duties as needed.

    + Fully competent in ADLs, telemetry application, patient safety indicators, and specimen collection.

    + Limited access to medications—only distributes to nurses.

    + Maintain competency in at least one advanced skill: phlebotomy, IV/Foley removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal.

    + High school diploma or GED required.

    + Must meet one of the following experience/education criteria:

    + 1 year of general healthcare experience.

    + 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days.

    + Enrollment in PT/OT/PA or related healthcare program with at least one clinical rotation completed.

    + Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

    + Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class.

    + Successful completion of eRecord training.

    + EMT or Paramedic certification preferred, or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

    + Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal within 90 days of hire/transfer

    + Act 33 with renewal

    + Act 34 with renewal

    + Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

    + ACLS preferred
