The CVOR team within the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Heart Institute is growing — and we're looking for a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) who thrives in high-acuity settings and is passionate about pediatric cardiac care.
Schedule: Full-time position with four 10-hour shifts per week plus shared call responsibilities among CVOR CSTs.

Our expert team specializes in advanced surgical and interventional procedures, providing comprehensive care for infants, children, and young adults with heart disease.
• Your Impact: As a CVOR CST, you’ll play a key role in complex pediatric cardiac surgeries, contributing directly to life-saving outcomes. Once proficient in CVOR procedures, you'll have the opportunity to expand your skills through Cath Lab training, deepening your expertise in cardiovascular care.
•⚕️ Candidate Preferences: While all experience levels are considered, candidates with pediatric cardiac surgery experience are preferred, followed by those with OR background. Ambitious newcomers with a passion for learning are welcome too!
•⚕️ Clinical Expertise and Support
+ Recognized by surgeons as exceptionally qualified.
+ Anticipates surgeon’s needs throughout procedures and assists efficiently.
+ Holds in-depth knowledge of specific surgical specialties or broad knowledge across many.
+ Ensures medications are labeled and handed to surgeons according to policy.
+ Supports cost containment through efficient use of materials and equipment.
• Operating Room Preparation and Maintenance
+ Sets up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions before procedures.
+ Assembles and verifies functionality of both sterile and non-sterile equipment.
+ Maintains asepsis in the operating room and restocks post-operation.
+ Cleans, stores, and secures all equipment and instruments.
+ Applies aseptic techniques and ensures safety regarding explosive hazards.
•♂️Patient Preparation and Assistance
+ Prepares patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and prepping incision sites.
+ Transports patients to operating room and assists with positioning and draping.
+ Helps surgical team don sterile gowns and gloves.
•️ Intraoperative Responsibilities
+ Hands instruments and sutures to surgeons and assistants promptly.
+ Cuts sutures, holds retractors, manages suction, and sponges operative sites.
+ Assists with surgical counts of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
+ Prepares and handles specimens for lab analysis and applies dressings.
Training and Leadership
+ Coordinates daily supervision of surgical technicians.
+ Serves as shift Lead, resolving questions and operational issues.
+ Teaches theoretical principles and technical skills to students and new staff.
+ Serves as a resource for other staff and assists the head nurse with precepting.
+ Precepts others in specialty colleges.
Supplies, Equipment, and Process Improvement
+ Oversees repairs, ordering, and maintenance of specialty service equipment, lasers, and instruments under clinician direction.
+ Supervises use of supplies and equipment for safe patient care.
+ Demonstrates initiative in solving patient and technical issues to improve OR operations.
+ Identifies and assists in implementing process improvements.
Communication and Collaboration
+ Exhibits excellent communication skills with surgeons, specialty team members, and departments.
+ Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and serves as a resource across disciplines.
+ Other duties as assigned.
+ Open to all levels of experience. Peds cardiac experience is a plus.
+ Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
+ 4 years of current Operating Room experience required for Expert level.
+ Advanced knowledge of at least 3 surgical specialists, must have 24/7 accountability in 1 or more of the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery (including Heart Transplant), Neurosurgery, Thoracic Lung Transplant, Transplant (Liver/Kidney), Trauma (General).
+ Must be a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on last performance evaluation.
+ Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) required.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
+ Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) OR Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC)
+ Act 31, 33, 34, 73 clearances with renewal
