Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Lead Genetics Counselor, the Genetics Counselor is responsible for providing genetic counseling to patients, parents and families.
Essential Job Functions
+ Gathers family and medical history and provides counsel to patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
+ Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options. Obtains informed consent and interested patients.
+ Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents case and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
+ Assists families and understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks.
+ Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate.
+ Coordinates and supports the execution of research of protocol as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
+ Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
+ Provides patient care/counseling to all patients of childbearing age.

Licensing/Certification
Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC), American Board of Genetic Counseling (required)
Education
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline (required)
Work Experience
2 years of experience working in a same or similar position (required)
Training
EPIC Electronic Health Record (preferred)
Language
