Description of Work

This position performs a variety of office assistant tasks in support of administrative, program, or technical operations in the Surry County Maintenance Office. Functions include a variety of record keeping, reporting, and filing activities; public contact, answering telephone, directing calls to appropriate person and taking messages. Good communication skills are necessary. Position will process payroll, inventory, purchase orders, and accounts payable through SAP and Ariba; personnel and other office duties such as typing correspondence, filing and handling of incoming and outgoing mail. Must have knowledge and use of office equipment and related computer technology (Microsoft Windows, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and SAP). Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends and holidays.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Customer service experience, including resolving customer issues.
+ Experience with Microsoft Office using programs such as Access, Word, and Excel.
+ Experience completing and/or maintaining records and reports.
+ Experience interpreting and/or explaining policies, procedures and laws.
+ Experience with letter writing, using correct spelling, punctuation and proofreading
Additional Expectations:
Must be detailed oriented, self-motivated and able to multi-task. Must have experience answering multi-line phone, working independently and maintaining and organizing records. Must have ability to accurately use Microsoft Windows (Word, Excel, etc.). Must have ability to communicate and respond to all inquiries and instructions in a timely manner. Must have ability to use proper grammar, vocabulary, spelling and office terminology to compose and proofread all correspondence. Must be capable of working with minimal supervision.

*Applicants with SAP R/3 experience will be given preference.*
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
