Description of Work

The Ferry Crew Member II – Senior AB Deckhand is responsible for supervising the other deckhands while the vessel is underway and acting as the team leader in response to any emergencies onboard. He or she will be able to assist the master in the operation of the vessel and will be available to operate the vessel in the event the master becomes incapacitated.
Ninety days or more of experience on board a vessel and fifty hours at the helm under the supervision of a master or mate are required.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Leading deckhands in directing the parking of trucks, automobiles, and trailers to ensure proper weight distribution on the vessel. Chocking vehicle wheels to prevent movement while underway. Supervising the operation of the adjustable deck ramp during vehicle loading and unloading. Investigating loading and unloading accidents and assisting the ferry captain in preparing detailed reports of incidents and activities for the ferry operations manager.
Oversees patrols of the deck area while underway to maintain discipline and order and prevent passengers from entering unauthorized areas and from sitting on side rails or standing in dangerous areas. Checks safety chains and nets at each departure and checks for fuel leaks from vehicles. Inspects all deck machinery, lifesaving equipment and fixtures to ensure proper operating conditions.
During off-peak periods, the Senior AB Deckhand assists the engineer with routine vessel maintenance and steers the vessel along the prescribed course under the Ferry Master’s supervision. In the event of an emergency, this individual assumes the duties of the master and is responsible for handling the vessel in open water and confined areas during docking and undocking, using both follow-up and non-follow-up controls. Proficiency in wheelhouse navigation, safety protocols, and communication equipment is essential.
Be knowledgeable of all emergency drills, requirements, and protocols. Be trained in security procedures and their implementation. Fulfill the duties of a vessel security officer as outlined in the Ferry Division joint-vessel facility security plan. Possess thorough knowledge of the Ferry Division Policies and Procedures Manual and ensure its effective implementation. Be familiar with U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and maritime regulations and standards.
Assists the crew to secure the vessel in case of fire, breakdowns, or inclement weather; assists maintenance crews to repair the vessel.
This position works from the Cherry Branch Ferry Operations and works shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off.
A COPY OF BOTH TWIC AND VALID USCG ABLE SEAMAN MERCHANT MARINERS CREDENTIAL INCLUDING A CURRENT MEDICAL CARD MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.

+ Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with general public, to investigate conduct and enforce discipline in an effective and efficient manner.

Possession of a valid Able Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard. Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
