    Job Summary:

    The Utility Worker I is responsible for performing and overseeing others in all necessary tasks involved with the installation of water services and performing maintenance, repair and inspection of all Tidewater Utilities fire hydrants, mains, services, valves and distribution system components. Works on the inspection, repair and maintenance of sewage collection systems. All work is to be performed with a reasonable standard of care and in a safe, professional manner. Reports to a Distribution Foreman.

    Work Performed:

    + Performs and oversees installation of saddles, valves and piping for new water services.

    + Repairs, inspects and maintains sewer collection systems and piping, maintain inspection/repair logs.

    + Make repairs to fire hydrants, valves, mains, services and distribution components.

    + Ensures current Miss Utility ticket is on hand before digging with equipment.

    + Is responsible to ensure all marked or suspected utilities are located by shovel before proceeding.

    + Use water distribution GIS system to locate and verify location of valves and components.

    + Use sewer collection system maps to locate manholes and determine the direction of flow.

    + Accounts for materials used and transfer information onto appropriate work order.

    + Must be able to complete all necessary paperwork with minimum errors.

    + Responds to emergency water leaks and sewer backups and effect corrective actions.

    + Perform other duties to offer assistance to other departments as directed.

    + May be required to work unscheduled overtime and will perform on-call duties.

    + Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions.

    + Provide job site supervision and oversight, responsible for job site safety of others.

    + Utilize Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) to receive/complete Field Activities.

    Qualifications:

    + Capable to work well with others and without direct supervision, direct work of others.

    + Experience in working in the water service field, ability to share knowledge with less experienced workers.

    + Be able to use basic computer skills to complete timesheets, work orders and other tasks.

    + Must be able to wear safety harness and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

    + Competently operate equipment such as backhoe, trencher and power sewer snake.

    + Average overall mechanical skills.

    + Able to interact with customers in a professional manner and maintain a positive company image.

    + Ability to obtain “competent person” designation for trenching.

    + Valid driver’s license - CDL Class A

    Physical Demands:

    Frequent standing, sitting, walking, and driving. Routinely using shovels and hand tools. Regularly, climbing in and out of trenches with and without ladders. Routinely, bending crouching, knelling, working in confining spaces and working over ones head. Occasionally, lifting and carrying object weighing as much as 50 pounds unassisted and more with assistance. Routinely walking on uneven ground and slopes.

    Working Conditions:

    Working indoors and out in all types of weather and temperatures. Routinely exposed to continuous background noise and water treatment chemicals. Rarely exposed to raw sewage. Occasionally exposed to loud noises and fumes.

    Compensation & Benefits:

    + Salary Range: $48,870 - $73,300 annually, based on experience and qualifications.

    This position requires a Commercial Drivers License. Use of marijuana, whether allowed by state law or medical marijuana card, controlled substances, prescribed or otherwise, not allowed by the Federal Motor Carriers Administration of the United States Department of Transportation, disqualifies candidacy.

     

    Candidates must possess authorization to work in the United States.

     

    Candidates must be able to pass a drug screen, pre-employment physical, background check, and have a valid driver’s license. Additionally, must be cleared by Department of Defense to access government facility.
