    Description of Work Unit

Chemical and biological engineers are problem solvers that address human health, the environment and big challenges like climate change. New fields such as the bioeconomy, smart materials, and agile manufacturing will require chemical and biological engineers.

The Colorado State University School of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering ( SBCE ) provides transdisciplinary education, research, and practical experiences throughout a full range of degree programs. Within the SBCE , academic excellence across diverse fields converges into three primary areas of research: (1) regenerative and rehabilitative medicine, (2) imaging and diagnostics, and (3) medical devices and therapeutics.

    Position Summary

This is a research scientist position requiring advanced training and skills in nanomaterials preparation and characterization.

The position will be full-time (40 hrs per week), and the starting annual salary will be $55,000 – $65,000.

Duties will be in the Kipper and Bark laboratories and in collaboration with the Prof. Ketul Popat’s laboratory at George Mason University. The employee will be expected to possess experimental skills and knowledge of nanomaterials preparation using anodization of titanium and polyelectrolyte multilayer formation, materials characterization by X-ray and FT-IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and nanomechanical property measurements. The employee must also be skilled at mammalian and bacterial cell culture and assays for cytocompatibility and antimicrobial activity. The employee should also be competent to work with human blood in studies of hemocompatibility. The hemocompatibility studies can include whole blood clotting and component-based studies. This challenging project will further require engineering skills designing fluid flow experiments, modeling fluid mechanics, and interpreting results from such experiments.

The selected candidate will be expected to conceive and implement experimental investigations. The hired individual will also be responsible for developing and optimizing methods for the study of biological responses to novel nanomaterials under flow conditions. This will involve researching, formulating, and validating reproducible methods under different experimental design conditions, in collaboration with the Kipper, Bark, and Popat research groups, maintaining laboratory notes, and writing reports and manuscripts for publication, and preparing research grant proposals that will successfully fund the position.
