    Function of Position:

    The director of athletics is responsible for providing administrative direction and oversight for all intercollegiate athletics staff, programs, facilities, and activities. The director is accountable for shaping and building the department's reputation on the institutional, conference, regional, and national levels. This reputation will be established not only by the performance and character shown on the field of play, but also by the overall academic performance of the members on each team. The director is responsible for ensuring compliance with all college, conference, regional, and national affiliation regulations. This position must sustain a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism, and respect at all levels. The director will manage the overall athletic budget while approving all expenditures in a fiscally responsible manner. The director will also provide leadership in the areas of fundraising, marketing, and community development. The individual serving in this role serves as an enthusiastic and informed ambassador for initiatives central to the College's commitment to excellence, innovation, and efficiency in serving a diverse student body and in supporting a diverse faculty and staff. The director of athletics is responsive to emerging issues and opportunities. The position will support MCC's regional and national reputation as a leader among best practices colleges.

    Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

    Primary Functions:

    + Provides executive leadership for the athletic program at the highest level

    + Ensures an environment that promotes a commitment to strong academic achievement, student retention, and graduation

    + Provides recommendations to the Associate Vice President of Student Development to improve the scope and quality of the athletic program and facilities

    + Gives direction to and provides support for coaches, administrative staff, student-athletes, and support staff

    + Ensures compliance with the eligibility requirements of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the conduct regulations of the College, and the principles of good sportsmanship

    + Provides and arranges supervision for all home athletic events

    + Develops and administers the Athletic Department budget, with funding sources from both the College and the MCC Association, Inc., while ensuring compliance with budget policies and procedures

    + Implements fundraising activities to generate revenue to support the Athletic Department and athletic excellence.

    + Delivers strong and affirmative leadership in the refinement and implementation of the department's strategic priorities, aligning department plans with the Academic and Student Affairs Master Plan and the College's mission, values, and Strategic Plan

    + Maintains appropriate athletic department policies, procedures, and practices, while ensuring consistency with all college policies and requirements, all state and federal laws, including Title IX compliance

    + Demonstrates leadership and service at the conference, regional, and national levels to provide guidance and support in advancing the mission of community college athletics, giving exposure to MCC at all levels, and ensuring MCC's commitment as a leader nationally

    Secondary Functions:

    + Collaborates with MCC's Campus Events Department, MCC, and community users of the College's athletic facilities; responsible for communication with all users to ensure adherence to operational protocol

    + Collaborates on marketing and promotion of the Athletic Department

    + Oversees the student-athlete success program and orientation

    + Ensures all athletic programs follow a comprehensive program of injury prevention and coordinates with athletic trainers to ensure access to appropriate injury rehabilitation for student-athletes

    + Oversees a comprehensive program that meets the needs of students not involved in college athletics

    + Performs additional duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Student Development

    Job Requirements:

    Required Qualifications:

    + Earned master's degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution

    + 5 years of prior experience in the administration of a college athletic program

    + Must be available to work some nights, weekends, and holidays as program schedules dictate

    + Ability to lead professional staff in a comprehensive organization

    + Experience working in a diverse and inclusive environment

    + Understanding of athletic eligibility rules, regulations, and Title IX compliance

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Earned doctoral degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution

    + Understanding of NJCAA and/or NCAA eligibility rules and regulations

    + Coaching experience at the collegiate level

    + Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college

    + Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

    Additional Information:

    Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity, and college budget. This position has a range of $93,000 to $113,070 and is based on the aforementioned factors.

     

    MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit-eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting, and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based on business and operational needs. Limitations to flexible work arrangements are outlined in the official policy.

     

    Prohibition of Remote Work Outside New York State: Remote work locations outside New York State are not authorized by the College due to out-of-state tax and regulatory implications. In limited circumstances, prompted by business or operational needs, the College may approve requests to work remotely outside of New York State, on a short-term, temporary basis.
