    Summary You will serve as a WELDER in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT, STRUCTURAL SHOP (CODE 920) of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD - POINT LOMA DETACHMENT, SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA. Responsibilities You will work on various types of metals and alloys of varying sizes, shapes and thicknesses, the nature of which is applicable to the construction of, repair of, and the maintenance of submarines, ships, utilities and facilities of the activity. You will maintain pre-heat and interpass temperature requirements, clean weld deposits by manual and/or pneumatically powered tools, which include hand-grinders, needle guns and deburring machines to remove weld splatter and defects. You will perform arc-welding cutting and gouging operations using the proper electrode, electrode size; inert gas, air, flux; or a combination of these, according to procedures, personal qualifications, or capabilities. You will observe and obey fire safety and prevention rules and regulations, use precaution against fire for personal safety and shop safety, and maintain safety standards. You will conduct inspections of the work performed to assure the conformance to plans, specifications, and instructions have been followed. The Screen-out Element for this position: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSIITON WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION such as: Applying a variety of manual welding processes to make more difficult welds, including welds in hard to reach areas. Planning and laying out work from blueprints, sketches, drawing, specifications, and work orders. Operating various types of electrical arc-welding and cutting equipment by the manual, semi­ automatic methods, such as gas-metal-arc, gas-tungsten-arc, submerged-arc, manual-metal arc welding, plasma-arc cutting, arc-air-gouging, and more. Determining the welding method to use, and selecting the right material to use, such as electrodes, filler-wire, flux, and etc. Understanding and applying applicable safety rules and regulations.
