Job Summary:
The Quality Engineer supports new product/process development and manufacturing through the application of quality engineering techniques. This person will handle multiple projects and tasks throughout product development, product launch, and manufacturing. Additionally, this individual will ensure that the product meets quality standards consistent with customer and other regulatory requirements. The Quality Engineer will represent the organization and interface with the customer on a regular basis. This role also supports plant activities in customer issues, and supplier issues, and initiates corrective actions with an emphasis on process improvement.
This position also serves as the site’s Paint/Coating Specialist—supporting, validating, and auditing coating operations (e.g., CARC painting, powder coating) to ensure proper surface preparation, coating application, and compliance with customer specifications.
Essential Functions:
+ Support and ensure adherence to the Quality Management System (QMS) and related processes.
+ Create, review, and maintain quality documentation, including procedures, work instructions, control plans, check sheets, FMEAs, and quality alerts.
+ Maintain up-to-date actions in Plex workflows related to assigned responsibilities.
+ Participate in internal audits of core processes, recommend improvements, and support corrective actions.
+ Participate in APQP activities for assigned parts/projects, reviewing contracts, drawings, routings, purchase orders, and plans to ensure customer quality requirements are met.
+ Review customer contracts for specific quality clauses and compliance requirements.
+ Assist in product and process qualification, including PPAP, FAI, gage R&R, and MSA preparation and execution.
+ Perform quality-related activities for Engineering Change Notices (ECN) and Product Change Requests (PCR).
+ Define product characteristics and determine appropriate inspection methods and devices.
+ Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to identify and monitor critical characteristics.
+ Apply statistical process control (SPC) methods to monitor and improve product quality.
+ Conduct or coordinate product inspections, testing, and evaluations to ensure conformance to specifications.
+ Lead or support quality assurance activities for coating operations, including painting, powder coating, and surface treatments.
+ Define and maintain coating inspection criteria, such as film thickness, adhesion, cure, gloss, and appearance.
+ Audit and monitor coating environments for proper surface prep, environmental controls, and equipment functionality.
+ Investigate coating defects (e.g., runs, fisheyes, pinholes), lead root cause analysis, and implement corrective/preventive actions.
+ Review and approve coating-related documentation and provide technical support and training to involved personnel.
+ Support coating-related aspects of FAI, PPAP, and control plan documentation.
+ Validate new paint systems, materials, and process changes to ensure coating quality.
+ Lead and participate in corrective and preventive action teams for internal, supplier, and customer quality issues.
+ Use problem-solving tools (e.g., 5-Why, Fishbone, A3, Six Sigma, poka-yoke) to reduce defects and improve processes.
+ Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) activities and disposition non-conforming material in a timely and controlled manner.
+ Identify and communicate significant quality issues and recommend improvements to leadership.
+ Train inspectors and associates on key product characteristics, inspection procedures, and quality awareness.
+ Develop and maintain work instructions to guide quality inspection and testing activities.
+ Participate in and drive continual improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
+ Complete customer submissions and documentation, including Certificate of Conformance (CoC) and compliance uploads.
+ Maintain knowledge of applicable government, customer, and industry quality standards and ensure conformance.
+ Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
+ Perform all job-related duties as assigned, including responsibilities not explicitly listed above.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
+ Strong analytical and advanced problem-solving skills
+ Proficient in statistical process control methods and applications.
+ Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
+ Understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
+ measurement devices.
+ Skilled in the use of handheld and surface plate measuring instruments
+ Proficient with computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite
+ Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
+ Strong communication and collaboration skills.
+ Capable of performing effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
Education:
+ Bachelor’s degree in quality, mechanical or industrial engineering (required)
Experience:
+ At least 3 years of quality-related experience in a manufacturing setting.
+ ASQ Certification preferred.
Background Prerequisites:
+ Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks and controlled substance testing.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
This role is based in a manufacturing environment and requires the physical and mental ability to perform essential functions effectively, with or without reasonable accommodations. Key requirements include:
+ Occasional lifting and carrying of inspection tools, parts, or materials weighing up to 50 pounds
+ Sitting at a desk or workstation for approximately 50% of the workday to analyze data, review documentation, and compile reports
+ Frequent standing and walking on the production floor to perform inspections, audits, and collaborate with cross-functional teams
+ Occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, or crouching when accessing machinery or inspecting components in various locations
+ Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for operating precision measurement tools and reading technical drawings, schematics, and specification
+ Exposure to typical manufacturing conditions, including moderate noise levels, moving machinery, fluctuating temperatures, and occasional airborne particles
